To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and

devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav ...,

I greet you and bless you,

I received, some time ago, your letter that was in response to mine. You allude to a leader of your community who visited me and you do not know what he told me. Now, he said only good things about your abilities, your conduct, and what concerns you. He only deplores that you do not use your qualities in communal domains, in general, and in that of education, in particular. I agreed with him and I did so even more firmly knowing what I heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, about the importance of such an accomplishment in every place and at all times, but how much more so in our dismantled generation and especially in a dismantled place. Now, I did not find a response on this point in your letter. Moreover, you yourself write that your affairs are largely in deficit and you thank Hashem for being able now to repay a small part of your debts. The argument that consists in saying: "Who am I?" is therefore all the more surprising and misplaced.

Likewise, you tell me that you give a Gemara* course. In a general way, the result is commensurate with the effort. And a Gemara* course, as important as it may be, does not replace educational activity, especially concerning the Mitzvos* concretely applied. Indeed, this Mitzvah* has but a time and the generation itself has but a time. If one does not take care of the youth now, when will one do so? To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more. In fact, you grant extenuating circumstances to this person, but I hope that you do so only in the letter you address to me, that you will use to the fullest the influence you exercise over him, and that moreover you will increase the number of your friends in order to become aware of your role and of what is incumbent upon you, a Mitzvah* that cannot be entrusted to others and that even supersedes the study of the Torah*, as our Sages stipulate, in tractate Moed Katan* 9b.

May Hashem grant that you know success as quickly as possible, for, as I said, the Mitzvah* has but a time and the generation has but a time. You surely organized a Chassidic* gathering on the occasion of the days of liberation of 12 and 13 Tammuz*, those of the deliverance of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, leader of Israel. Hashem will grant each person the success of being able to follow the head. Thus, in the future, all the obstacles to the dissemination of Judaism, in general, and to the strengthening and development of the accomplishments and institutions in which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, invested his effort, in particular, will be reduced and then will disappear. And we will follow his ways, for eternity. With my blessing,

זה מזמן קבלתי מכתבו מענה על מכתב שלי. במ"ש אודות עסקן קהלתו שביקר אצלי ושאינו יודע מה שסיפר בהנוגע... שי'.

הנה הנ"ל סיפר רק טוב - בהנוגע לכשרונותיו והנהגתו ועניניו, אלא שמצטער על מה שאינו מנצל כשרונותיו בענינים הצבורים בכלל, ובענין חינוך בפרט, אשר בזה הסכמתי עם הנ"ל, ועוד בתוספת יותר - בידעי ובשמעי כ"פ מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע ע"ד גודל ענין זה בכל המקומות ובכל הזמנים ועאכו"כ בדורנו שמם זה ועאכו"כ כשנמצאים במקם שמם. וע"ז לא מצאתי מענה גם במכתב כת"ר. ובפרט שגם הוא כותב, שעסק מסחרו משוקע בחובות גדולים, ומודים להשי"ת על אשר עתה פורע קצת מחובותיו, שא"כ - הטענה למה זה אנכי בולטת ומודגשת עוד יותר.

כן מ"ש שמגיד שיעור בגמרא וכו', הרי ידוע הכל דלפום גמלא שיחנא, ובפרט שהגדת שיעור בגמרא - אף שמובן גודל הענין בזה - אינו דומה לעניני חינוך, ובפרט ענינים הקשורים במצות מעשיות, שהרי זה מצוה עוברת, ולא עוד אלא - שגם דור עובר, היינו נוער, שאם לא עכשיו אימתי, האריכות לדכוותי' בודאי אך למותר

ואע"פ שמלמד זכות על... שי', תקותי חזקה שאין זה אלא במכתבו אלי, אבל בהנוגע... שי', הנה ישתמש בכל השפעתו עליו, וגם ירבה עליון רעים, שיכיר את תפקידו והמוטל עליו במצוה שאי אפשר לעשותה ע"י אחרים, שדוחה גם ת"ת וכפסק רז"ל במו"ק ט' ע"ב.

ויה"ר שיצליח בהקדם, וכנ"ל - שזהו מצוה עוברת ודור עובר.

בודאי התועדו בימי הגאולה י"ב וי"ג תמוז, ימי הגאולה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע ראש ישראל, ויצליח השי"ת את כאו"א שי[ה']' בתר רישא גופא אזיל. אשר מכאן ולהבא יתמעטו ויבטלו המניעות בעבודת הפצת היהדות בכלל, ובהחזקת והרחבת הענינים והמוסדות שבהם עמל ויגע כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בפרט, ונלכה באורחותיו נס"ו.
