I greet you and bless you,

After, once again, a long interruption of your correspondence, I have duly received your letter of 7 Marcheshvan*, in which you tell me that, for various reasons, students are missing from your school compared to the number of positions that were authorized for you by the relevant administrations. You ask me what must be done. It is quite evident that one must act, to the fullest extent possible and even beyond what is possible, in order to increase the number of these students. You say that this is not easy, that a teacher must not lower himself by pleading with parents to send their children to your school.

It happens that the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, in general, are not easy and King David already declared: "I am even more effaced than this," even though: "if a king wishes to renounce the honor due to him, one does not accede to his request." Moreover, I see in this no shame whatsoever, since what is at stake is saving Jews by integrating them into a school in which they will receive a proper education. If all the male and female teachers mobilize for this objective, it is certain that you will gather the required number of students. But if, after all of this, contrary to immediate and sound logic, for absolutely incomprehensible reasons, you were unable to gather the students you are missing, it is only then that you will opt for the second solution you propose, that is to say to cause the school to incur a loss to itself. לאחרי שוב הפעם הפסק הכי ארוך במכתבים, נתקבל מכתבו מז' מ"ח, בו כותב אשר מאיזה סיבות חסר מספר תלמידים בבית הספר שלהם לערך המשרות שאישרו ממשרדים המתאימים, ושואל מה לעשות בזה.

והנה מובן ופשוט שצריך לעשות ככל האפשרי ועוד יותר מזה להרבות מספר התלמידים, ומ"ש שלא דבר קל הוא וגם שאין זה מכבוד המורה להתחנן לפני ההורים שבניהם ילמדו בביה"ס בו מורה.

הנה כל עניני תורה ומצות אינם קלים, ועל כל הענינים כבר הורם דוד המלך, אף שמלך שמחל על כבודו אין כבודו מחול, ונקלותי עוד מזאת וגו', ובפרט שאיני רואה בזה כל בזיון במקום שהמדובר אודות הצלת נפשות בני ישראל עי"ז שיוקלטו בבי"ס דחינוך כשר, וכשיתגייסו כל המורים-ות לתכלית זו; בטח יצליחו למלאות מספר התלמידים, ורק אם גם לאחרי זה והיפך השכל הבריא ושכל הישר ומסיבות אינן מובנות כלל לא יעלה בידם למלאות חלק מסוים ממספר התלמידים החסרים, רק אז יש לאחוז באופן השני שכותב, היינו להיות - ביה"ס - חובל בעצמו, שבדיני אדם הוא פטור.
