and devotes himself to communal needs,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter from the eve of the Shabbos* that blesses the month "for Hashem and they said, in these terms: I will sing for Hashem" (note 2: A verse from the Song of the Sea whose initial letters form the name of Elul*), according to the explanation of the Pri Etz Chaim*, Gate 24, that of Rosh Hashanah*, chapter 1. You ask me, in your letter, about the verse: "See that Hashem has given you the Shabbos*." You will consult, on this subject, its commentary found at the beginning of the Likkutei Torah*. Wide praise has been given to this explanation, which is reproduced in the Hayom Yom*, at Parshas* Beshalach*. One finds therein interpretations of the Baal Shem Tov*, of the Maggid* (note 3: Of Mezeritch), of the Admur HaZaken*. You also ask me about the connection between vision (note 4: Since this verse says: "See") and Shabbos*. Now, this is quite evident since one knows that Shabbos* and the festival are "intrinsic sanctity" (note 5: Independent of human action, since from creation the seventh day is systematically a Shabbos) and "sacred convocation" (note 6: Revealed by men since the date of festivals depends on Rosh Chodesh*, whose date is fixed by the decision of the tribunal after hearing the witnesses), wisdom and understanding, as it is said: "Who is wise? He who sees." One will also see, in particular, the Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah*, chapter 3, and the Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Vaeschanan*.
