I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 12 Elul*, in which you mention the last Melaveh Malkah*. It is a pity that you were affected, it seems, by the small attendance. Quite the contrary, those present were not few in number. They were even numerous, considering the preparations you describe and, by a fortiori reasoning, you can deduce from this the success you would have had if these preparations had been introduced in their time and fully carried out. May Hashem grant that in this matter, there be fulfilled the saying of the Baal Shem Tov* (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 7958), based on a verse, according to which, when: "your beginning is in hardship," then only, "your end will be very prosperous." Of course, this alludes to what does not depend on the free will of man. It is in this domain that the beginning is in hardship. Nevertheless, in this case as well, the actions of one man are independent of the free will of the other.

It would be good for the participants in this Chassidic* gathering to receive good wishes for the new year, from you and from all the organizers who helped you, so that no one imagines that this was merely an activity of an exceptional character or that it had only a financial purpose, without continuation. Furthermore, I was satisfied with what you write to me concerning your dissemination of Chassidus* and its customs in your city. In addition, your wife and your son come to your aid in this matter. May Hashem grant you good health, true joy, so that it be thus for long days and good years and that He positively fulfill the wish of your heart (note 2: Presumably that of having a child). With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

במענה על מכתבו מי"ב אלול, בו כותב ע"ד המלוה מלכה העבר, וחבל על שכנראה התרשם ממיעוט המשתתפים וכו'. ואדרבה, אין זה מיעוט כי כפי המתאר אופן ההכנה לזה הרי בערכה זהו ריבוי גדול. ומזה יש ללמוד קל וחומר לאופן ההצלחה אם היתה ההכנה בזמנה ובמיל[וא]ה.

ויה"ר שגם בזה יקוים פתגם הבעש"ט ודיוקו בלשון הכתבו והי' ראשיתך מצער (ואז) אחריתך ישגה מאד. אף שמובן שכוונת הבעש"ט לענינים שאינם תלוים בבחירה, שבזה ההתחלה היא מצער, אבל גם בנידון דידן- הרי פעולותיו של איש אחד אינם תלוים בבחירתו של איש השני.

ומהנכון הי' שאלו שהשתתפו יקבלו מאתו ומהמתעסקים אתו בענין ההתועדות ברכת השנה וכיו"ב, למען שלא יכול מי שהוא לטעון שהי' בטח ענין חד פעמי או ענין כספי, ותו לא מידי.

נהניתי ממ"ש אודות פעולותיו בהפצת תורת החסידות והדרכותי' ב[...] וכן אשר זוגתו ובנם שיחיו סייעו בזה. ויה"ר ש[...] בריאות הנכונה ושמחה אמיתי [...] בכגון דא לאורך ימים ושנים טובות וימלא השי"ת משאלות לבבם לטובה.
