I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of the sixth day of Tishrei*, in which you describe to me your situation regarding the service of Hashem and your manner of fearing Him. Indeed, "one people rises against the other" (note 2: The evil inclination against the good, sometimes with success) and you therefore conceive sadness from this.

It is quite clear that reflection and thoughts giving rise to renunciation, laziness, and weakness in the service of Hashem have a source that is not pure. They are a stratagem of the "little cunning one" (note 3: The evil inclination), who takes on the appearance of the fear of Hashem. It is therefore fitting to fight against everything that concerns him, especially since the means of doing so is already specified in several chapters of the Tanya*, in particular from chapter 27 onward. It is a pity that you waste so much time on inconceivable thoughts, when you could use it in the three domains of the service of Hashem that are the Torah*, prayer, and good deeds. May Hashem grant you success in redoubling your ardor and constancy in your service of Hashem, which will be joyful, in accordance with the teachings of our holy masters, whose merit will protect us. With my blessing for success in all that has just been said, as well as to be definitively sealed for a good year,

במענה על מכתבו מששי בתשרי, בו כותב אודות מצבו בעבודה ובריאת השם אשר לאום מלאום יאמץ ובמילא בא עי"ז לעצבות וכו'.

והנה ברורים הדברים אשר התבוננות ומחשבות המביאות ליאוש ועצלות וחלישות בעבודת השי"ת מקורם בלתי טהור והוא מתחבולות הקלוגינקער המתעלם באיצטלא של יראת שמים ובמילא צריך להלחם נגד כל עניניו, ובפרט שכבר מלתו אמורה בתניא בכמה פרקים ומהם בפרק כ"ז ואילך, וחבל על הזמן שמבלה במחשבות מופרכות בפשיטות, בה בשעה שיכול לנצלו על שלשת הקוים דתורה עבודה ומצות והשי"ת יצליחו להוסיף בהתמדה ושקידה ולעבודת ה' בשמחה מתאים להוראת נשיאנו הק' זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.
