To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Shneur Zalman (note 1: This is presumably Rav Shneur Zalman Butman. See, regarding him, letter no. 7812),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter in which you describe to me the state of your affairs. It is evident that everything depends on your character traits. If you devote yourself to them with submission, the results will obviously be accordingly. Based on what your letter seems to indicate, you prefer to manage your own business rather than hold a position within that of others. Furthermore, you envisage settling in the United States. Now, I have already emphasized many times that, according to the most evident logic, it is not in this way that one improves one's means of subsistence. As can be verified, it will be easier for you to settle over there (note 2: Presumably in the Holy Land). Moreover, you will have peace of mind and will be able to set a time for the study of the Torah*. Here again, this will be easier for you than in New York, as practice demonstrates. May Hashem guide you on the path that will be good for you and for the members of your family, both materially and spiritually, in all that has been said. With my blessing,

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אודות מצב העסק שלו וכו'.

הנה מובן שזה תלוי בחושי הנפש שלו, כי באם יבחר אופן שיתעסק בו בדרך קבלת עול, הנה מובן שיפעול זה גם כן על התוצאות. וכנראה במכתבו, נוטה יותר להמשיך בעסקו ולא לקבל משרה אצל אחרים.

ומה שכותב אודות העתקה לארצוה"ב, הנה כבר גליתי דעתי כמה פעמים, שעל פי שכל הבריא הרי לא זוהי הדרך להטבת מצב הפרנסה. וכפי הנראה [...] בקל יותר להסתדר, נוסף על מנוחת הנפש והקביעות עתים בתורה שגם זה הוא בקל יותר מאשר בנויארק, וכנראה בחוש.

והשי"ת ינחהו בדרך הטובה לפניו ול[פ]ני ב"ב יחיו בגשמיות וברוחניות בכל האמור לעיל.
