I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 14 Kislev* and I am surprised that you do not mention therein the visit of the Tzaddik*, the great Rav of Satmar Shlita*, to your city. No doubt you will do so at the next opportunity, with all the necessary detail. You tell me that the team working at the library (note 1: In French in the original) is beginning to take an interest in the concrete practice of Mitzvos*. I am satisfied with this, for such is the purpose of man, as it is said: "Guard His Commandments, for this is the entire purpose of man." Without a doubt, the principle according to which one knows elevation in the domain of holiness will apply in this matter, in an ever-increasing manner, especially in these propitious days, in which the Halachah* retains the opinion of Beis Hillel* (note 2: Which requires lighting the Chanukah candles in ascending order).

You mention a few words that could be transmitted to the students. In this regard, I have written on numerous occasions that this is the responsibility of the administration and its members, who need not seek a substitute in this matter. You also speak to me of a student, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years, who devotes himself to study with ardor. I am satisfied with this and may Hashem grant that he see the good fruit of his effort. For now, there is no reason to intervene in all the other domains concerning him. I enclose the pamphlet that was published for 19 Kislev*. No doubt you will make its content available to the greatest number. The merit of what is public depends on it. With my blessing,

I have received your letter of 22 Kislev* and I am astonished that you do not specify to me how the rabbinical ordination celebration went. Of course, had I known that they would have sung that particular song, I would not have sent a letter on that occasion and I would not have asked someone to attend. I did not imagine that the evil inclination would have been so clever. You conclude by excusing yourself for what you said in your preceding letter. According to our holy Torah*, there is no reason to excuse oneself when one writes what one thinks. As for me, my response remains the one I gave you. There is therefore no reason to ask me once more about this, for I maintain my position and I do not adopt yours.

The person you know came to visit me, but he made no allusion to the university. Quite the contrary, it was I who questioned him on this subject and he answered me that in the future, there would be no question of it either. His son will perhaps come here for the evening of the fifth candle (note 3: Of Chanukah*). If one entrusts him with the list of all the students who study Chassidus*, one will be able to give him, for them, the Chanukah* money, in accordance with custom. You ask me for a "lesson in conduct." Now, this subject is abundantly treated in the talks and letters of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ד כסלו, ולפלא שאינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד שהותו של הרה"צ הרה"ג כו' מסאטמאר שליט"א שהי' במחנם הט', ובטח ימלא בהזדמנות הבאה, ובפרטיות הדרושה.

נהניתי ממ"ש אשר מהחוג של עובדי הביבליאטעק וכו' מתענינים כבר בהנוגע למצוות מעשיות, כי הרי זה כל האדם וכמ"ש ואת מצותיו שמור כי זה כל האדם, ובודאי יקיימו גם בזה מעלין בקודש ומוסיף והולך, ובפרט בימי סגולה אלו שהלכה כבית הלל.

... במ"ש אודות מלים אחדים להתלמידים, הנה גם בזה כבר כתבתי כ"פ, שענינים המוטלים על ההנהלה או על חברים פרטים שלה, אין להם לחפש ממלא מקומם בזה.

נהניתי במ"ש אודות הלימוד בהתמדה של הת'... שליט"א, ויה"ר שיראה פרי טוב בעמלו ויגיעתו, ולעת עתה אין להתערב בשאר עניניו.

מוס"פ הקונטרס לי"ט כסלו, ובטח יזכה בתוכנו את הרבים וזכות הרבים תלוי בו.

נתקבל מכתבו מכ"ב כסלו (ולפלא שאינו כותב ע"ד אופן חג הסמיכה. ומובן, שלו הייתי חושש אפילו שינגנו ניגון הידוע - לא הייתי שולח מכתב להחגיגה וגם לא הייתי כותב... שי'... שיסע לשם. ועל אומנות כזו מהיצה"ר -גם לא שיערתי).

מה שמסיים בהתנצלות על מש"כ במכתבו הקודם - הנה ע"פ תורתנו הק' אין להתנצל על מש"כ ווי מען טראכט. והמענה מצדי הוא - הנ"ל, ובמילא שוב אין מקום לשאלני בענין זה, כי בדעתי הנ"ל הנני עומד, ולא בדעתו.

מר... שי' ביקרני ולא דיבר ע"ד קאלעדזש וכיו"ב. ואדרבה, על שאלתי, אמר שגם להבא לא ידבר.

אפשר שבנו שי' יסע לכאן לליל נר ה'. ואם יתנו לו רשימת כל התלמידים הלומדים חסידות, ויוכל לקבל גם בשבילם מעות חנוכה כנהוג.
