By the grace of Hashem,

27 Teves* 5716,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 19 Teves*, in which you describe to me your moral situation, which is not satisfactory. You wish to improve it and you ask me for directives in this matter. Now, the beginning of the service of Hashem, its foundation, is submission, the acceptance of instructions before intellectual perception, "we will do and (then) we will understand." And this depends only on you. If you make, in your mind, the decision to do it, you will approach the elder Chabad* Rabbanim* who are in the holy city of Yerushalayim*, may it be restored and rebuilt. You will present your matter to them and you will comply with their directives. May Hashem grant you the success of accomplishing all of this faithfully. Thus will be fulfilled in you the promise of our Sages according to which: "if you make efforts, these will be crowned with success."

You surely keep the three studies that concern everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. These bear upon the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, and they are well known. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future. With my blessing for giving good news,

במענה על מכתבו מי"ט טבת, בו כותב אודות מצבו ברוחניות שאינו משביע רצון, ורוצה לתקנו ומבקש הוראות בזה.

הנה ראשית העבודה ויסודה הוא הענין דקבלת עול הקדמת נעשה (קיום

ההוראות) לנשמע, - (הבנה והשגה בשכל עצמו) - ובידו הדבר תלוי, וכשיחליט בנפשו לעשות כזה, הנה יפנה לזקני רבני אנ"ש אשר בירושת"ו ויפרש לפניהם עניניו וימלא הוראתם והשי"ת יצליחו שיעשה זה אליבא דנפשי' ובמילא יקוים בו מאמר רז"ל יגעת ומצאת.
