I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 2 Iyar*, the date of the birth of the Rebbe Maharash*, whose merit will protect us. You write to me the following points:

A) Naturally, when money comes into your hands, several expenses present themselves. You therefore devote this sum to them and, as a result, you must then take out a loan. Now, one knows that natural behavior is the way of natural creatures, who do not possess a divine soul that transcends nature. On the other hand, this is not so for a Jew, defined as the son of the Holy One blessed be He. In the words of the Admur HaZaken* (note 1: In the second chapter of the Tanya*), author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, this divine soul is "the second soul of Israel, a veritable part of the Divinity above." And the service of Hashem of man, the purpose of the descent of his soul here below, consists for him in changing his nature or, at the very least, in mastering and containing it, as explained at length in the Tanya*, from chapter 15 onward. This is also verified when it concerns a nature that is not truly detrimental. But how much more is this the case when one is a spender, which has the consequence of borrowing. Now, the verse clearly specifies that: "the borrower is subjugated" (note 2: To the one who grants the loan). It is therefore certain that you possess the necessary strength to overcome such a nature. This depends solely on your determination.

B) You indicate to me that you do not have success in what you undertake. In the future, each weekday morning, before the prayer, you will set aside one or two francs for Tzedakah*. After the prayer, each day as well, during the week, on Shabbos* and festivals, you will read the Tehillim*, according to their monthly division. In this way, you will have increased success in everything you undertake.

C) You mention the state of health of this person. Now, treatments have been discovered recently for the illness you cite in your letter (note 3: This refers to epilepsy). If one takes these medications at the fixed times, by prescription of a specialist, one no longer suffers from it and, with time, one is healed. I am surprised that you do not know this. But perhaps the specialists who are surely in your large city have not yet discovered them.

The request for blessing contained in your letter will be read, at a propitious moment, near the holy tomb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, leader of Israel. It would furthermore be fitting to have your Tefillin* checked, as well as those of your brothers, and the Mezuzos* of your dwelling. May Hashem grant you the success of giving good news of all that has been said. With my blessing,

במענה על מכתבם מב' אייר, יום הולדת כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בו כותב:

א) דלפי טבעו כשבא כסף לידו מזדמנים לו כמה ענינים של הוצאה ומוציא כספו עד שמצד זה מוכרח להלואות.

והנה כבר ידוע אשר הנהגה על פי טבע זוהי הנהגת בריות טבעים שאין להם נפש האלקית שהיא למעלה מהטבע, משא"כ כאו"א מישראל שנקראים בנים להקב"ה, כי כלשון רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשולחן ערוך נפש האלקית שהיא נפש השנית בישראל היא חלק אלקה ממעל ממש, ועבודת האדם, אשר זהו כוונת ירידת נשמתו למטה היא לשנות את הטבע, ועכ"פ למשול ולשלוט על הטבע, וכמבואר בארוכה בתניא פרק ט"ו ואילך, וכל הוא בהנוגע אפילו טבע שאין בו היזק כ"כ, אעכו"כ כשהטבע מביא לבזבוז ממון כהנ"ל ותוצאותי' הוא שנעשה לוה וכלשון הכתוב עבד לוה הרי בודאי שניתנו לוה כחות להתגבר על טבעו האמור ואין דבר זה תלוי אלא ברצונו.

ב) במה שכותב שאין לו הצלחה בעניניו. - הנה יסדר מכאן ולהבא, שבכל יום חול בקר קודם התפלה, יפריש פראנק או שנים לצדקה ולאחר התפלה בכל יום (חול וש"ק ויו"ט) יאמר השיעור תהלים - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - ועי"ז תתרבה ההצלחה בעניניו.

ג) במה שכותב אודות בריאות... הנה החולי שמזכיר במכתבו מצאו עתה כמה תרופות, שכשלוקחים אותם בזמנם הקבועים ע"י הרופא מומחה, אז אין סובלים מחולי זה ובמשך הזמן מתרפאים ולפלא שאינם יודעים עד"ז, ואולי לא מצאו עדיין הרופאים מומחים בהמקצוע שבטח נמצאים בעיר גדולה...

הפ"נ המוסגר במכתבו יקרא על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע נשיא ישראל, וצריך לבדוק את התפילין שלו ושל אחיו שיחיו, וכן המזוזות בדירתם, והשי"ת יצלחו לבשר טוב בכל האמור.
