To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Shneur Zalman (note 2: Rav Sh. Z. Wilenkin. See, regarding him, letter no. 5987),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter, requesting a blessing, which will be read, at a propitious moment, near the holy tomb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. You tell me, indeed, that you received a letter from the country in which we previously found ourselves (note 3: Russia), in which you are asked for medications. Now, after an inquiry conducted here, you discovered that these medications are very strong and that it is impossible to prescribe them without having examined the patient. In fact, one has already been confronted with such situations. The custom in this matter is to send, together with the medications, the instructions permitting their use. In certain cases, indeed, they prove particularly suitable. A physician friend, of your acquaintance, will be able to obtain these instructions from the manufacturer of these medications or from the periodicals published by the medical associations. No doubt you know several physicians in the city where you currently find yourself. Through their intermediary, you will be able to obtain them and send them with the medications.

One must also know that several of these periodicals are received in the country where we previously found ourselves. If, in sending these medications, you specify the references of the articles concerning them, one may think that a local physician will succeed in obtaining them. But, of course, it is preferable to send them these periodicals from here. May Hashem grant that you give me good news of all of this, with a visible and tangible good. במענה על מכתבו פ"נ, שיקרא בעת רצון על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, ותוכנו, שקבל מכתב ממדינתנו לפנים, מבקשים סמי רפואה, ולאחרי החקירה ודרישה כאן, נתודע להם, שבהיות סממנים אלו חריפים, אי אפשר לתת אותם מבלי ראות את החולה.

והנה כבר היו כמה מקרים כאלו, והנהוג בכגון דא, אשר ביחד עם הסממנים שולחים לשם ג"כ החוברת המבארת אופני ההשתמשות בסממנים אלו, ובאיזה מקרים מתאימים הם ביותר, אשר חוברת כזו יכול להשיג רופא מכיר וידיד שלהם אצל הפאבריק המייצרת סממנים אלו, או ע"י הירחונים של אגודת הרופאים וכיו"ב. ובודאי מכירים הם כמה רופאים במחנם עתה, ועל ידם יוכלו להשיג כל הנ"ל ולשלוח ביחד עם הסממנים.

ועוד זאת למודעי, אשר כמה מירחונים אלו מתקבלים גם במדינתנו לפנים, ואם עם סממני הרפואות ששולחים יכתבו באיזה חוברת מהן מדובר ע"ד סממנים אלו, יש מקום לומר שהרופא שם יוכל להשיג את החוברת. אבל מובן שטוב יותר לשלוח גם החוברת מכאן, ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בטוב הנראה והנגלה בכל האמור.
