I respond to your letter of the conclusion of Shabbos* Parshas Mikeitz* (note 2: 28 Kislev*) and to those that preceded it. You are considering the creation of a teacher training seminary. The general principle in this matter is the following. It is not for Chabad* to seek competition as an end in itself, but rather to act in order to disseminate Judaism, in general, and the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*), in particular. Furthermore, as is the case in all domains of the world, the financial and human means are limited. If one devotes them to one domain, another will necessarily suffer from it. For this reason, when certain achievements, based on sacred values, already exist, Chabad* does not have the objective of competing with them. This is not its purpose, since important needs, in means and in personnel, will result from it. A teacher training seminary requires the presence of specialists to organize it. And even if one finds a sufficient number of persons desirous of continuing their studies in this seminary that will bear the name of Chabad*, one will nonetheless be confronted with even greater difficulties: who will be the professors of this seminary? They will have to be specialists in the subject they teach and, in addition, be recognized by the competent administrations, which one can assume will require certificates attesting to their competence. And these difficulties will be even greater if this seminary is located, not in a large city, but rather in a village.

Now, if one wishes to establish this teacher seminary, one will observe that all these conditions are not met. I mean that there indeed exist other seminaries, based on sacred values, that I do not know of specialists who will accept to teach in this one and, in addition, to travel to Kfar Chabad*. To organize it, the most considerable means will be necessary and, in the domains in which the principle applies according to which: "the candle lit for one person illuminates one hundred" (note 4: When it is possible to achieve economies of scale), I do not know whether the number of students will approach one hundred, or whether the contrary will be the case (note 5: Whether there will be very few). Consequently, I do not understand why one should concern oneself with this. It would be preferable to mobilize all those who possess aptitudes in this matter and to send them to the seminaries that already exist. At most, one can approach the latter, which are based on sacred values, and ask them for some improvements. Furthermore, you also make reference to lodgings for the young people. But you do not specify your point, you do not say what this will serve and how it will be organized. No doubt you will provide me with these details on the next occasion.

In response to the telegram reporting your candidacy and that of Uri Ben Shachar, regarding Sdeh Micha* (note 6: Where a new school was to be opened), I myself sent, this day, a telegram to say that it would be good for you to be entrusted with this position. I allude to at least a first period, until everything is organized, that is to say, until the end of the school year. No doubt you will arrange that this does not at all call into question the preparations for the summer camp, as well as all the other areas of activity of the network (note 7: Of the schools Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch* in the Holy Land). The reason is the following. I spoke with Mr. Levanon about the enlargement of the building available to the network (note 7) in Jaffa*, to the fullest extent of what is necessary. There is therefore no reason to transform, at the present time, the school that is there, so as not to provide a pretext that would allow the postponement of the promise. In this matter, there is also another reason, which is essential. I have good hope, since I know you from here, that you will work at Sdeh Micha* with all the fitting ardor, so that this project will be fruitful. Now, one can think that the success in establishing this school will determine the relations maintained subsequently with the concerned administrations. All of this is quite evident. במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק מקץ והקודמיו, בו כותב אודות הסברא דהסמינר למורים.

והנה הוראה כללית ובכגון דא, שאין מענינו של חב"ד להתחרות לשם התחרות, כי אם בעשי' לשם הפצה ביהדות בכלל ולהפצת המעינות ביחוד. עוד זאת, וככל ענין בעולם, הרי האמצעים (הכספים, וכן אנשים וכיו"ב) מוגבלים, וכשלוקחים מהם לענין אחד, אי אפשר שלא יגע בענין שני. מזה מובן אשר במקצוע שיש בו די מתעסקים עטה"ק, אין ענינה של חב"ד להדחק לשם. ופשיטא שאין זה מענינה, אם הענין דורש השתדלות הכי גדולה והן באמצעים והן באנשים. מובן שענין סמינר למורים - דורש מומחים במקצוע בארגון זה, ושאפילו את"ל שיהי' די מספר הרוצים ללמור סמינר זה שיקרא על שם חב"ד, הרי קישוים יותר גדולים בזה: מי יהיו המורים בסמינר (שצריכים להיות מומחים בהמקצוע שמלמדים, ובטח צ"ל מוכרים ממשרדים המתאימים, ויש חשש שידרשו דוקא תעודות מעידות על המומחיות), והקישוים מתגברים, באת"ל שהסמינר יהי' לא בעיר גדולה כי אם בכפר ומושב. ובהנוגע לסמינר למורים, הנה כאו"כ מהתנאים לחיוב - אינו, כוונתי - שישנם סמינרים למורים עטה"ק, ואיני רואה מומחים שילמדו בסמינר זה ובפרט שיסעו לכפר חב"ד, הענין ידרוש אמצעים הכי גדולים לארגנו, ובודאי שבעניני הסמינר האלו שהם נר לאחד נר למאה מסופקני אם מספר הת' יהי קרוב למאה או להיפך. וע"פ כל הנ"ל אינו מובן כל הענין בזה. וכדאי הי' שיגייסו כל המוכשרים - שיתלמדו אומנות ההוראה באלו הסמינרים הקיימים, ולכל היותר - לבוא בדברים עם הסמינרים הקיימים עטה"ק ולדרוש מהם תנאים של שיפור וכו'.

מ"ש אודות אכסניות נוער, אינו מפרש מהו הענין, מטרתו, ואופנו וכו'. ובטח ימלא בהזדמנות הבאה.

במענה להמברק אודות מועמדתו ושל אורי בן שחר שי', בהנוגע לשדה מיכה, הברקתי היום, שכדאי שהוא יקח זה על עצמו [כוונתי בזה בעיקר - לזמן הראשון עד שיאורגן הדבר כדי צרכו, ז.א. עד סוף שנת הלימודים, ובודאי יוכל לסדר הדבר באופן שלא יגע כלל בההכנות בהנוגע להקייטנא וכן שאר ענינים הכללים של הרשת שהתחיל להתעסק בהם], והטעם, שע"פ מה שדברתי עם מר לבנון שי' בהנוגע להרחבת הבנין של הרשת ביפו, ככל הדרוש, אין כדאי להכניס עתה שינוים בביה"ס אשר שם, בכדי שלא יהי' כל מקום לאמתלא לדיחוי ההבטחה וכו'. ועוד טעם והוא העיקר, שתקותי חזקה ע"פ שהכרתיו כאן, שיעבוד בענין שדה מיכה במרץ ככל הדרוש ויצליח להעמיד הענין בטוב. והרי יש מקום לומר שבאופן העמדת מוסד זה - תלוים יהיו היחסים עם המשרדים המתאימים, וק"ל.
