By the grace of Hashem,

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself

to communal needs, Rav Avraham (note 2: Rav A. Pariz. See, regarding him, letter no. 8854),

I greet you and bless you,

I received your letters of the 1st, 2nd, and 20th of Elul* in their time. To my great surprise, I learned that you do not pay attention to your state of health. It is astonishing that one must write, from another continent, to say such evident things, when one knows the importance that our masters accord to the preservation of the body. And the Baal Shem Tov* emphasizes precisely that: "you shall come to his aid." Indeed, the Chassidim* make no distinction among the injunctions of our masters. It is clear that one must fulfill all of them fully. I will say no more, so evident is this.

You will surely specify to me that, whatever the situation of the past may have been, in the future you will put this injunction into practice and you will preserve your body. Indeed, "having a body in good health and whole is part of the ways of Hashem" (note 3: According to the terms of the Rambam*). With my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year, as well as for giving good news,

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתביו בעתם, מא' ב' וכ' אלול, ולתמהוני הכי גדול, נודעתי שאינו שומר על בריאותו.

ולפלא שצריך לכתוב ע"ד ענ[י]נים פשוטים כאלו מעבר לים, בה בשעה שידועה דרישת רבותינו נשיאינו בשמירת הגוף. וע"פ תורת הבעש"ט עזוב תעזוב עמו דוקא. והרי אצל חסידים אין נפק"מ מהו ציווי רבותינו נשיאינו וכו' כי אם דבר פשוט שצריכים לקיימו במילואו. ולרוב פשיטות הדבר לא אאריך.

ובודאי יודיעני שאיך שלא הי' המצב בעבר, הנה מכאן ולהבא יתנהג כציווי האמור בשמירת הגוף, והרי היות הגוף בריא ושלם מדרכי השם הוא.
