To the young man Menachem Ben Tzion (note 1: Rav M. B. T. Wilhelm. See, regarding him, letter no. 8118),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letters of 13 and 20 Sivan*, in which you formulate the proposal of enlarging what concerns the evening Yeshivos* (note 2: See, on this subject, letters no. 8176 and 8191), but you yourself specify that this will result in significant expenses. Your letter does not clearly indicate whether you drafted it on your own initiative or as a representative of the leadership of the evening Yeshivos*. It is, of course, legitimate for each person to describe the situation as he conceives it and to formulate the proposals that seem fitting to him. Nevertheless, it is preferable and more judicious to systematically indicate whether the other members of the leadership accept these proposals or not.

In this case, you specify that the members of the leadership have discussed these proposals. Nevertheless, according to your description, even if one admits that you speak in the name of the entire leadership, one must observe that this will result in significant expenses. Another point, which is essential: it is necessary to reflect on the purpose of these evening Yeshivos*, even if the study of the Torah* is, in itself, an important and essential goal. It is necessary, indeed, that the students eventually join the schools toward which the leaders will direct them, and not that after a month, a year, they leave elsewhere, as in the cases you cite. From what one observes here, this point is currently on the agenda and one wonders how to arrange, how to improve. It is clear that one will not succeed merely by serving dinner, even if one had the necessary budget, which in this case is not so.

At a propitious moment, all those you cite will be mentioned near the holy tomb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. May Hashem grant that you announce good news to me. With my blessing,

שלום וברכה!

במענה למכתביו מי"ג וכ' סיון, בם כותב ההצעה להרחיב עניני ישיבות הערב, ובעצמו מוסיף במכתבו שקשור הענין הוצאות גדולות וכו'.

והנה אינו ברור ממכתבו, באם נכתב על דעת עצמו, או בתור ב"כ מכל הנהלת ישיבות הערב, שהרי מובן וגם פשוט, שאף שנכון שכל אחד מבאר המצב כפי שנראה לו, וכן מוסיף הצעות הנראות לו. אבל טוב יותר ונכון יותר שבהנוגע להצעות, יודגש בכל פעם ופעם, באם שאר חברי הנהלה מסכימים או אין מסכימים. ובפרט בנדון כהאמור, שכותב שכבר נדבר בתוככי חברי ההנהלה. בכל אופן - כפי שמתאר הענין במכתבו ואת"ל שכותב בשם חברי ההנהלה, יש להעיר ע"ד גודל ההוצאות הכרוכות בדבר. וגם זה עיקר - שסו"ס צריך להתבונן על התכלית הפנימית של ישיבות הערב (אף שלימוד תורה בפ"ע תכלית גדולה ועיקר, הרי בטבע הענינים) שהתלמידים ימשיכו באותם המוסדות להם מתכוונים המתעסקים, ולא שלאחרי חדש ושנה יעברו למקומות אחרים.

וכאותן הדוגמאות שכותב אודותם. וכנראה מכאן - נקודה זו עומדת עתה על סדר היום, איך לתקן ולשפר זה, ולא בנתינת ארוחות ערב וכיו"ב ישופר הענין (אפילו באם היו ההוצאות מן המוכן, ובפרט שאין זה כן).

בעת רצון יזכירו את כל אלה שכותב אודותם על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע. ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בזה.
