knowledge, Rav Shlomo Yosef (note 1: Rav S. Y. Zevin, author of the Talmudic Encyclopedia. See, regarding him, letter no. 7931),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 18 Teves*. I have asked the leadership of Kehot* Publications to respond to you as quickly as possible, concerning the printing of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZaken*. You also ask me about a young man (note 2: Whose engagement gave rise to excessive demands) and one may wonder what it is possible to do in the matter, insofar as pressures are effective for what is delivered to the will of each person, but only in an exceptional manner for what depends on his capacities. Nevertheless, since you have already intervened in the matter, you must have seen the engagement contract. I do not know well the customs of the holy city of Yerushalayim*, in this domain, but it seems that the demands are excessive, including by reference to those who formulate very broad ones.

You also speak to me of the great Rav D. Chanzin (note 3: Rav David Chanzin. See, regarding him, letter no. 8042). I am surprised that you do not mention his function as judge at the rabbinical court. Furthermore, I received, these days, the visit of Rav Valgelernter and, during our discussion, he indicated to me that he had met you and questioned you about him. As for Rav D. Ch. himself, he communicated no information to me in the matter.

You speak to me of the Talmudic Encyclopedia and you know in what manner I consider this enterprise (note 4: To which the Rebbe accords the greatest importance. See, on this subject, letter no. 7199). I will therefore act in the fitting manner if what you write is demanded, but I must repeat once more that I spoke, several months ago, to representatives of the commission for payments and reparations (note 5: Of Nazi crimes. In English in the text: "claims conference") and I expressed to them my surprise in observing that the publication of this Encyclopedia is not more broadly subsidized. They responded that the contrary was true and expressed the wish that the edition be completed as quickly as possible, for the subsidy that would then be granted would be increased thereby. I asked whether they informed the project leadership of all this and they responded in the affirmative.

I hope that at least for the day of the Hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, the tenth day of the coming month, the enterprises of Chabad* in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, will be multiplied, among the enterprises of Chabad* in every place, for, to my pain, I do not have the merit of receiving news that are favorable and joyous, as would be necessary, nor even somewhat less than that.

To pass to the point that is closest to us, it seems that the committee for the schools of the network (note 6: The schools of Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* Lubavitch in the Holy Land) in the region of the holy city of Yerushalayim* has not yet entered into function. The same applies to the Chabad* quarter that must be established there. This has existed for about a year, however, in the world of speech. I have been told that it was hoped the cornerstone could be laid at the end of the month of Shevat*, but one pain adds to another, concerning the situation in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, after the Yeshivah* Toras Emes (note 7: The Lubavitch Yeshivah of Yerushalayim, for which, presumably, a commitment made had not been honored). We have been asked to adopt a positive conclusion and the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with guile (note 8: He does not ask of man what he is not able to accomplish. In this case, it must therefore be possible to conclude this letter positively, even if the news is not favorable). It is certain that the conclusion and the final word of all this will take up the formulation of the prayer that we say and that we obtain from the Master of prayers: "what will be favorable for us" (note 9: See, on this subject, letter no. 8196). May Hashem grant that it be so very soon. With my respects and my blessing to give favorable news of all of this,

For a certain reason, the sending of the present letter was delayed and, in the meantime, I received the visit of a representative of the National Religious Party of the Holy Land, who formulated a proposal, which is also a request. It is more or less certain that there will be no candidate from the United States for the position of Chief Rabbi (note 10: Of Eretz Yisrael*). He therefore asked me to convince you as quickly as possible to accept the presentation of your candidacy (note 11: See, on this subject, letters no. 6967 and 7199). If this is indeed the case, they will eliminate the proposal for an age limit that is currently being discussed. In this way, your election will be assured. I responded to him that he surely knew what I had said (note 12: See, on this subject, letter no. 6925) to their leader, during the interview we had this summer. In my opinion, you must not accept such a proposal. Nevertheless, it is said that the situation is grave, that this affects the greatest number. I therefore indicated that I would question you about this situation and about what has evolved recently. When you respond to me, I will be able to tell you whether my position has changed in the matter. Such was, in general, the content of our discussion. Of course, on this subject, the more precise you are, the better it will be.

במ"ש אודות האברך... שי' - צ"ע מה יש לעשות בזה, שהרי עשי' (לחץ) מועילה בענין התלוי ברצון, אבל רק לעתים רחוקות בדבר התלוי ביכולת. וכיון שכבר כת"ר נכנס בנדון זה, בטח ראה את כתב קשוה"ת, ואף שאינני בקי במנהגי ירושלים עיה"ק בכגון דא, נראה שמופרזות הדרישות באופן בלתי רגיל גם בין מפריזים.

ובמ"ש אודות הרה"ג וכו' הר"ד שי' חנזין - לפלא שאינו מזכיר ע"ד משרת הדיינות שלו, ובפרט שימים אלו ביקרני הרב ולגלרנטר שי' ובתוך השיחה הזכיר שבפגישתו עם כת"ר שי' העלה גם בעיא זו בתוך שיחתם. וגם מהררד"ח שי' לא קבלתי כל ידיעות בזה...

מ"ש אודות אנציקלופדיא התלמודית, ידוע יחסי למפעל זה, ובמילא אעשה באופן המתאים באם יודרש זה שכותב כת"ר. אבל עלי לכפול עוה"פ, אשר בדברי לפני כו"כ חדשים עם ב"כ הקליימס קונפרנץ (ועדת השילומין ופיצוים), הבעתי תמיהתי על שאין מרבים בסיוע להדפסת האנציקלופ[דיא], וענוני שאדרבה ואדרבה, והלואי היתה ההו"ל זריזה יותר ויותר שהיו גם מוסיפים בהענקה שלהם. ועל שאלתי אם הודיעו עד"ז להנהלת המפעל, ענוני בחיוב.

תקותי שעכ"פ בקשר עם יום ההילולא של כ"ק מו"ח אדמור, זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, בעשירי בחודש הבע"ל, יתוסף כהנה וכהנה בכל דמפעלי חב"ד באה"ק ת"ו בתוככי מפעלי חב"ד בכל מקום, כי לצערי עדיין אינני זוכה לבשו"ט ומשמחות כדבעי, ואולי אפילו לא לקצת פחות מזה.

ובהקרוב קרוב יותר - בהנוגע לועד בתי ספר הרשת אשר באזור ירושלים עיה"ק ת"ו, אשר כנראה עדיין לא התחיל בפעולות, וכן בהנוגע לשיכון החבד"י אשר שם, שזה כמדומני יותר משנה שהותחל בעולם הדיבור, והודיעוני....שמקוים.. שלסוף חודש שבט תהי'... הנחת אבן הפינה! ונוסף צער זה על הצער להמצב באה"ק ת"ו בהנוגע לישיבת תורת אמת וכו' וכו'.

וכיון שנצטוינו לסיים בטוב, ואין הקב"ה בא בטרוניא, בודאי שסיום וחותם כל הנ"ל - גם בזה יהי' כנוסח התפלה שאנו מבקשים ופועלים מבעל הברכות, הטוב לנו.

ויהי רצון שיהי' בעגלא דידן.

מסיבה נתעכב המשלוח, ובנתיים בקרוני ב"כ המד"ל (שבאה"ק) בהצעה-בקשה: (קרוב ל)ודאי שמארצה"ב לא יהי' מועמד למשרת ר"ר ובקשתם להשפיע בהקדם על כת"ר שיסכים להיות מועמד, ואז (ע"פ השקו"ט שמנהלים עתה) יבטלו הצעת הגבלת הגיל, ובחירת כת"ר מובטחת.

עניתי - שבטח ידוע מה שאמרתי להראש שלהם בשיחתנו בקיץ- שלדעתי אין לכת"ר לרצות בהנ"ל. בכ"ז, כיון שאומרים שהמצב חמור, נוגע לרבים וכו'- אשאל את כת"ר ע"ד המצב בכהנ"ל מה נשתנה לאחרונה וכו', וכשיענני - אוכל לומר אם נשתנית דעתי בהאמור. ע"כ תוכן השיחה בכללות.

ומובן שבכגון דא - כל המפרט ה"ז משובח.
