By the grace of Hashem,

26 Tishrei* 5722,

To the young man Shneur Zalman,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of the day following Yom Kippur*, day that bears the Name of Hashem. You will consult (note 1: Concerning a seminal emission occurring on Yom Kippur) the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, at the gate of the additifs, at the beginning of the second part (note 2: In the edition of 5754, Orach Chaim*, volume 2, chapter 108. See the Igros Kodesh of the Tzemach Tzedek, volume 1, letter no. 26), which emphasize that the times have changed (note 3: That what was, previously, an unfavorable omen, is no longer so clearly at the present time). In addition, you will redouble your ardor and fervor in the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*. Obviously, you will do so with joy and enthusiasm.

It would be good, each weekday, to give several coins to Tzedakah*, before the morning prayer. Indeed, the assurance has been given to us (note 4: By our Sages, in tractate Megillah* 6b) that: "if you make efforts, they will be crowned with success." With my blessing to give good news,
