To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Tzvi Hirsch HaKohen (note 1: Rav T. H. Pfeffer, of Pittsburgh),

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 6 Cheshvan*, in which you tell me that the Bar Mitzvah* of your son will be this Friday, the eve of the holy Shabbos*. It is important, in such a case, that a gathering take place on the very day of his Bar Mitzvah*, in the presence of at least ten persons (note 2: See, on this subject, letters no. 7201, 7224 and 7405. The Rebbe underlines the expression: "on the very day"). On this occasion, the Bar Mitzvah* will comment on the Torah*, its revealed part and Chassidus*. Indeed, it is said, concerning this day, as the Zohar* explains, volume 2, page 98a: "It is on this day that I have begotten you." You will also consult the Zohar Chadash*, at Parshas Bereishis*, pages 10c and 15b. Of course, in addition to this, he will have to be called up to the Torah*, at its closest reading (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 6234), which means, as far as he is concerned, the following holy Shabbos*. The other celebrations will depend on your intentions, according to the conditions of the city and the place.

I am very surprised that you mention nothing of your actions destined to disseminate the wellsprings (note 4: Of Chassidus to the outside). Certainly, you have adopted this attitude for many years already and it is said (note 5: See tractate Yoma* 86b) that: "the one who commits a fault, then does so again, has, in the end, the impression of performing a permitted act." Yet, there is only a comparison therein (note 6: It is therefore not possible to make of it a truly permitted behavior). How much more so is this the case here, for, from one day to the next, we are approaching the true and complete deliverance. From time to time, the necessity, the need, the effort to disseminate these wellsprings (note 4) therefore grow. And, one knows the holy letter (note 7: Published at the beginning of the Keser Shem Tov) of the Baal Shem Tov*, on this subject. With my blessing to give good news of all of this,

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מו' חשון, בו כותב אודות בר מצוה של בנם שי' שחל ביום ועש"ק ושואל מתי יחוגו הבר מצוה.

ומה שנוגע בנדון דידן הוא, שביום מלאת לו י"ג שנה, יעשו התועדות עכ"פ עשרה מישראל, והבר מצוה ידבר בדברי תורה, נגלה וחסידות, כיון שעל יום זה נאמר, היום ילידתיך (זהר ח"ב צח, א. ועייג"כ ז"ח פרשת בראשית [י], ג. ט"ו ע"ב), ומובן שנוסף על הנ"ל צריך לעלות לתורה ביום קריאת התורה הסמוך, שבנדון דידי' הוא בש"ק שלאחריו, ושאר ההתועדויות - הרי זה תלוי איך שירצו לסדר בהתאם לזמני העיר והמקום.

לפלא גדול שאינו מזכיר דבר מפעולותיו בהפצת המעינות. ואף שנוהג כן זה כו"כ שנים, הנה עבר ושנה - כהיתר פועל רק בכ"ף הדמיון, ובפרט בהאמור, שמיום ליום מתקרבים אנו לגאולה האמיתית והשלימה, גדל יותר מזמן לזמן ההכרח בהשתדלות ויגיעה להפיץ המעינות. וכידוע אגרת הק' של הבעש"ט.
