To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav N. N. (note 1: Rav Nissan Nemanov, spiritual guide of the Yeshivah of Brunoy, in the Parisian region. See, regarding him, letters no. 7809 and 8302),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 24 MarCheshvan*, in which you describe the situation of the Yeshivah*. Various Chassidic* texts establish that quantity is not essential. Thus, it is said that: "Avraham* was unique" and his descendants inherited the land. For all that, it is emphasized, at various references, and a teaching of our Sages establishes it clearly, that "a thousand students undertake the study of the Written Law, but only one will succeed in teaching it." The explanation is, briefly, the following. It is necessary that a thousand students undertake the study of the Written Law for one alone to be in a position to teach it. One will understand this better according to what is set forth by the Likkutei Torah* on three Parashiyos* (note 2: In the Or HaTorah*, Bereishis, volume 6, from page 1026b), page 3a. It is said therein, indeed, that the number one thousand corresponds to the world of action, Asiyah*. Now, it is upon these thousand that the unique student who will teach depends, who is attached to the world of Atzilus* (note 3: The sketch of creation, at the perfect stage of unity). And, you will consult the wonderful explanation given on this subject.

It is evident that my purpose is not to deliver a discourse. I am alluding here to the number of students attending the Yeshivah*, which is appalling. And, it is no less surprising to observe that, in recent years, it has been diminishing. News has been received here according to which various circles of our brethren, the children of Israel, in France and especially in Paris, are preparing, in the domain of education, for the immigration to this country of the Jews of Algeria. This has already begun and it is increasing from time to time. Now, your letter makes no echo whatsoever of this news and of an action that would be undertaken in this domain.

You allude to students coming from here (note 4: In Adar Rishon 5722, a group of students from the Rebbe's Yeshivah was delegated to the Lubavitch Yeshivah of France. One will see, on this subject, the Rebbe's discourse of the eve of 12 Adar Rishon 5722). It is clear that you must, above all, address yourself to the leadership of the Yeshivah*, here itself, specifying in what manner it will be possible to bring them, in the middle of the school year, both here and in France. In addition, a point that is essential: what use will students from here have, speaking only Yiddish* or English, for our brethren, the children of Israel coming from Algeria, to whom it is necessary to address oneself in French or, at most, in the Holy Tongue? We are on the eve of the month of Kislev*, that of miracles and may Hashem therefore grant that a miracle occur in all these domains, that one add, that one advance and that one illuminate, with a great number of students, a posterity blessed of Hashem, studying the revealed part of the Torah* and Chassidus*.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מכ"ד מרחשון, בו כותב ע"ד המצב בהישיבה.

ואף שמבואר בכ"מ ובדא"ח שלא הכמות הוא העיקר, ואחד הי' אברהם וירש זרעו את הארץ, אבל ביחד עם זה מבואר בכ"מ גם מאמר חז"ל הידוע אלף נכנסים למקרא וכו' אחד יוצא להוראה, שנקודת הביאור, שכמות של אלף כניסה למקרא נוגע בשביל שיהי' אחד להוראה, ובהדגשה יותר יובן ע"פ המבואר (בלקו"ת לג' פרשיות ג' ע"א) שהאלף הוא בעולם העשי' ובזה תלוי האחד להוראה בעולם האצילות, עיי"ש דברים נפלאים בזה.

ומובן שלא לדרשה קאתינא, כ"א ע"ד כמות התלמידים בהישיבה שמבהילה היא.

ומה שנוגע לא פחות מזה, שבמשך שנים האחרונות הולכים ופוחתים... הגיעו לכאן ידיעות, שבכו"כ חוגים מאחב"י בצרפת וביחוד בפאריז, מתכוננים בשטח החינוך לקראת עליית היהודים מאלג'יר לצרפת שהתחילה מכבר והולכת וגדלה מזמן לזמן, ובמכתבו אין ניכר כל הד לידיעה האמורה ולפעולות בהאמור...

לכתבו אודות תלמידים מכאן - מובן שלכל לראש עליו לפנות להנהלת הישיבה דכאן, ולבארם ג"כ איך זה אפשר לסדר באמצע זמן הלימודים הן כאן והן בצרפת [...] ועד ועיקר איך זה יועיל הנ"ל, התלמידים דכאן המדברים אידיש או אנגלית בנוגע לאחב"י מאלזשיר וכיו"ב שצריכים לדבר עמהם בצרפתית או עכ"פ בלה"ק.

וכיון שעומדים אנו בערב חדש כסלו, חדש הנסים, יהי רצון שיחול נס בכל הענינים הנ"ל, ויהי' מוסיף והולך מוסיף ואור בריבוי תלמידים זרע ברך ה' לומדים נגלה וחסידות.
