Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8276 — Faith & Bitachon

By the grace of Hashem,

Sunday, first light,

beginning of Chanukah* 5722,

It seems (note 1: The following letter from the secretariat of the Rebbe accompanied the present one: "You will find enclosed the copy of an urgent instruction from the Rebbe Shlita*, which he transmitted to us on this day, asking that it be communicated to certain persons. Now, perhaps there are in your city certain persons who can be concerned by the teaching that derives from it. Furthermore, it is quite clear that each person must study it in detail. Consequently, we have deemed it appropriate to address it to you forthwith. And, no doubt you will hasten to disseminate it, to the fullest extent possible"), from the attached leaflet, that you stray, from time to time, from what is expected of you (note 2: See, on this subject, the following letter) and you do not make use of your capacities as you should, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Now, our Sages emphasize, in tractate Kesubos* 67a, the imperative necessity of doing so. Furthermore, one finds impassioned words, on this subject, in chapter 30 of the Tanya*, showing that laziness and indolence call into question the entirety of the service of Hashem, in its totality and also in its specific aspects, as chapter 26 further specifies. Conversely, eagerness is also important, as our Sages say and repeat, according to Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 21.

My interventions to improve this situation have, for the time being, proved in vain. Perhaps the Halachah* therefore permits me to say that I can do nothing to prevent you (note 3: So that the present situation is not that of a man who could intervene but chooses not to do so) and, in fact, my words are not heard, except in a superficial manner, which, moreover, is not left to your choice, as tractate Nedarim* 32b explains (note 4: A man cannot decide not to hear the words that are pronounced before him). As a result, it has happened that I received a response, which was merely an external (note 5: The Rebbe underlines the words: "external" and "specifying") pretext.

What is asked of me? You can surely justify your behavior, but I do not see who will "benefit" from this response and what will result from it. I will therefore try once more, in a different manner, hoping that perhaps... (note 6: This will prove effective). Thus, at the end of each week, on Friday, the eve of the holy Shabbos*, my secretariat will question you, in my name, in order to establish what was accomplished, during the week just passed, to improve your situation, of course specifying (note 5) all the details. Your response will be transmitted to me in writing so that it can be preserved for many days. Within a few weeks, and no later than the coming 10 Shevat*, everything must be back in order. May Hashem grant that it be so by adding, by advancing and by illuminating.

א) כיון שכנראה, פ' (ע"פ הגליון המצו"ב) מזמן לזמן מתרחק יותר מהמקווה ממנו, ניצול כשרונותיו כדבעי למהוי (הן בכמות והן באיכות), ע"פ מארז"ל (כתובות ס"ז רע"א) בגודל ההכרח שיהי' בדוקא כדבעי למהווי,

וביחוד ע"פ הדברים בזה חוצבי להבות אש, בתניא פ"ל, ע"פ משנ"ת שם איך שעצלות וכבדות נוגעים לכללות עבודת האדם, אין גאנצען שטעל, וגם בפרטי עבודתו (פכ"ו).

ולאידך גיסא - גודל מעלת הזריזות כו' הנאמר ונשנה בדברי רז"ל (אגה"ק סכ"א).

כיון שעשיותי בזה, לשפר הנ"ל, ע"ע לא פעלו כלל,

הנה, אף שאולי ע"פ פס"ד, יכולני לומר שאין בידי למחות, והראי' שאין דברי נשמעין (כ"א באוזן החיצוני - שבזה אין הבחירה בידי פ', וכמבואר בנדרים ל"ב רע"ב, ובמילא, לפעמים, קבלתי ג"כ מענה - אמתלא מן השפה ולחוץ ).

ומהי התביעה ממני - והרי בטח פ' יכול לתרץ הנהגתו - כיון שאיני רואה מי "ירויח" מהמענה והסדר שישתלשל מהמענה הזה - אנסה עוה"פ - באופן שונה מזה שע"ע, וכולי האי ואולי וכו',

והוא, שבסוף כל שבוע - היינו בועש"ק - ישאלו מהמזכ' בשמי את פ', מהנעשה במשך השבוע לשיפור הנ"ל (כמובן - בפירוט הענינים), והמענה - ימסר לי בכתב למען יעמוד ימים רבים, וכעבור איזה שבועות ולא יאוחר מיו"ד שבט הבע"ל - בטח יבורר המצב.
