You (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Pinchas Weberman and was drafted on his letter of the last day of Chanukah*. See, regarding him, letters no. 7669, 8334, 8457, 8504 and 8654) ask me (note 2: Rav Weberman wrote: "I observe that, in the letters he addresses to me, the Rebbe Shlita* writes my name, Pinchas Aharon, without a Yud*. Now, in the Torah*, as well as in the Beis Shmuel* on the names of men, a Yud* indeed appears therein") whether the name Pinchas is written with or without a Yud* (note 3: See, on this subject, the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 8, page 355, note 32). You will see, on this subject, the Zohar*, volume 3, pages 213b and 57b. According to this text, this letter is an addition. Nevertheless, in conformity with our tradition, as well as according to the Halachah*, based on the Shemos Gittin* commenting on the Beis Shmuel*, this Yud* must indeed appear therein. You will also see the Minchas Shai*, at the beginning of Parshas Pinchas*. Nevertheless, the Maharshal* bears testimony that this name is, in general, written without a Yud*, but it seems that this is the case only when it has no bearing on the Halachah*. This is also what the Talmud* says, for example regarding the names of Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair.

... לכתבו ע"ד השם פנחס חסר או מלא - ראה זח"ג (ריג, ב. ושם נז, ב) דהיו"ד אתוסף בי'. אבל ע"פ המסורה שלנו וכן נפסק להלכה (בשמות גטין להבית שמואל) צ"ל מלא. וראה מנחת שי ר"פ פנחס.

ובכל זה העיד המהרש"ל דרובן כותבים חסר (כנראה הכוונה מקום שאינו נוגע לדין). וכן הוא בש"ס בשמות דר"פ בן יאיר וכיו"ב.
