To the president of the community of Barcelona (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 8381),

may you have a long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received, in its time, your letter of 18 Kislev*. In the meantime, the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Michael Lipsker (note 2: Emissary of the Rebbe* to Meknes, Morocco) visited me here and we discussed the content of your letter. He himself has already returned to Europe and, after having spent some time there, he will visit your city on the occasion of his return to Meknes. Perhaps he will already be with you, upon receipt of the present letter.

On this occasion, on this eve of the holy Shabbos* Rosh Chodesh* Shevat*, I cannot refrain from mentioning the Hilloula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, the tenth day of Shevat*. For anyone who knows the history of our people, in Russia and especially for those who originate from that country, this date evokes memories, personal events dating from the period of the war and concerning the practice of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, the religious institutions found under the banner of the one whose Hilloula* we celebrate. Indeed, he gave of himself, in an effective manner, in order to preserve the values of our people and its way of life. For this purpose, he risked his life, on a daily basis. You surely have knowledge of this luminous episode, at least in its broad outlines. Now, in Jewish life, the purpose of remembrance is to strengthen action and, in this case, that which conforms to the worldview and the ambition of the one whose Hilloula* we celebrate and whose merit will protect us. מכתב כ' מיום י"ח כסלו נתקבל בעתו. בינתים ביקר כאן הרה"ג והרה"ח וו"ח אי"א עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוה"ר מיכאל שי' ליפסקר ודברנו אתו בתוכן מכתב כ', וכבר חזר לאירופא ואחרי שיעשה שם איזה זמן יבקר במחנם בדרכו למקנס, ואולי כבר ביקר במחנם לעת קבלת מכתב זה.

ובהזדמנות זו, בעמדנו ערב ש"ק ר"ח שבט, אתאפק לא אוכל מלהזכיר יום ההילולא של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, בעשירי בשבט, אשר כל היודע פרק בדברי ימי עמנו במדינת רוסיא, ובפרט אלה שעלו משם, הרי יום זה מעורר אצלם זכרונות וחוויות נפשיים מתקופת המלחמה בעד קיום התורה והמצוות ומוסדות הדת תחת דגלו של בעל ההילולא אשר חרף נפשו בפועל ממש לשמור על ערכי עמנו וצורת חייו, במסירות נפש ממש יום יום. ובודאי ידועה לכ' פרשה מזהירה זו, על כל פנים בקוים כלליים. והרי כל ענין של זכרון בחיי היהודי תכליתו הוא שיביא הוספה במעשה, ובנידון דידן הוספה במעשה בהתאם להשקפת עולמו ומשאת נפשו של בעל ההילולא, זי"ע.
