By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 24 Teves*, in which you relate to me your difficulties, at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, what its directorate told you, which you did not wish to heed. It is clear that it is not right to act in this manner. As our Torah*, Torah* of life, emphasizes on many occasions, a student of a Yeshivah*, especially of a Chassidic* Yeshivah*, must obey the dean and the directorate, even if this goes against his own opinion, even if he does not understand the reason at all. It is not surprising, however, that it is so, for the evil inclination does not address itself, from the outset, to a Jew to ask him to transgress the Shulchan Aruch*. If that were the case, he would not listen to it. On the other hand, it can convince the student that he (note 1: This student) understands his own situation better than the dean of the Yeshivah*. It is by proceeding in this manner that the "old and foolish king" (note 2: The evil inclination) imposes its opinion.

I hope it is unnecessary to say more. Upon receipt of the present letter, you will therefore modify your position and you will commit to conforming to all the instructions of the directorate. Above all, you will study the Torah* with ardor and constancy, according to the program of the Yeshivah* and the class in which you will be placed. As I have said, by studying in this manner, you will elevate yourself, from one class to another, in conformity with the promise of our Sages (note 3: In tractate Megillah* 6b) according to which: "if you make efforts, they will be crowned with success." You have surely adopted the three well-known studies, which pertain to the Chumash*, the Tehillim* and the Tanya*. With my blessing to give good news of all of this,

Of course, you may show the present letter to the directorate of the Yeshivah*, to which it is not necessary to address a specific letter.

במענה למכתבך מכ״ד טבת בו אתה כותב אודות הקשיים בישיבת

תומכי־תמימים ב . . .ומה שההנהלה הורתה לך ולא רצית לציית.

מובן שאין זה נכון לעשות כן ,וכפי שמבואר פעמים רבות בתורתנו

תורת חיים ,שתלמיד ישיבה ,ובפרט ישיבה חסידית ,צריך לציית לראש

הישיבה ולהנהלה גם אם נראה לו אחרת ,והוא לגמרי לא מבין את

הציווי שלהם,

וזה אינו פלא ,כי היצר הרע לא יבוא ליהודי לומר לו מיד בהתחלה,

עשה היפך השולחן ערוך ,שהרי לא ישמע לו ,אבל כאשר הוא אומר

שהתלמיד מבין יותר מאשר ראש הישיבה ,הוא יכול בדרך זו לפתות את

התלמיד שישמע לו ,למלך זקן וכסיל.

תקותי שמיותר להאריך בזה ,וכאשר תקבל את המכתב ,תשנה את

עמדתך ,ותקבל על עצמך לציית לכל הוראות ההנהלה ,והעיקר ללמוד

בהתמדה ושקידה על־פי סדרי הישיבה והכתה שיסדרו לך ,וכאמור ע״י

לימוד בהתמדה ושקידה תתעלה מכתה לכתה ,כהבטחת חכמנו ז״ל,

יגעת ומצאת.

ודאי אתה שומר את שלשת השיעורים של חומש תהלים ותניא

הידועים.
