To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself

to communal needs, full of eagerness,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 1 Adar Rishon* and the one that preceded it. The difference (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 8281) between a Mikveh* for which one draws the water from above and one that has an orifice on the floor is very important, of course. There is, indeed, a risk of water flowing out and, according to certain opinions, this prohibition is pronounced by the Torah*. Now, this risk persists even when the closure of the orifice is indisputable and, all the more so, if it is made with an object that can contract impurity. I am surprised that the person you cite does not know all of this.

You have, it seems to me, the Taharas Mayim*, the work of Rav Nissan Telushkin*. You will find therein all the explanations, on this subject. Of course, it is good that there be two basins, or even more. With my blessing to give good news of your communal activities and your personal concerns, as well as on the occasion of your birthday, for a year of success, material and spiritual, in general and specifically,

והנפק"מ בין מקוה ששואבין המים ממעל או שיש נקב ברצפת המקוה, גדול מאד כמובן: חשש זחילה (ובפרט לדעת האומרים שאיסור זחילה הוא מן התורה) אפילו באם הסתימה אין בה כל פקפוק, וביחוד כשהסתימה היא בדבר שמקבל טומאה. ולפלא מה שפלוני שכותבו אין ידוע לו מהנ"ל.

כמדומה שיש אצלו ספר טהרת המים להר"ן שי' טעלושקין וגם בו ימצא מהנ"ל.

מובן וגם פשוט שיש להשתדל שתהיינה שתי מקואות [ומה טוב יותר].
