By the grace of Hashem,

at the conclusion of the holy Shabbos* Parshas (note 1: Parshas Terumah*)

"They shall make Me a Sanctuary and

I will dwell among them" 5722,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and assumes a sacred mission (note 2: Teaching based on sacred values), Rav Hillel (note 3: Rav H. Pevsner, of Paris. See, regarding him, letters no. 1749 and 2334),

I greet you and bless you,

I received with pleasure your letter in which you tell me that you have obtained a sacred function, the post of rabbi, based on sacred values, of the synagogue, "small sanctuary," of seventeen (note 4: The Rebbe* writes Tov, good, a term whose numerical value is seventeen) Rue des Rosiers, in your city of Paris. May Hashem cause this appointment to be at a good and fruitful time.

And, it is known that success is achieved when one obtains more than what one expected at first, that is to say when everything concerning the synagogue develops, the prayer, the teachings of Torah* that are given in public or individually. One knows, indeed, the commentary that our Sages give (note 5: See also, on this subject, the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 19, page 384 and the references indicated) on the verse: "Hashem loves the gates of Zion* more than all the sanctuaries of Yaakov*." Thus, they specify, in tractate Berachos* 5a: "The gates distinguishing themselves in the Halachah*." Moreover, according to the memory I retain of the years during which I resided in Paris (note 6: From the end of the winter of 5693 (1933) until 5701 (1941)) and prayed regularly in this synagogue, I think that from this small sanctuary, prayer and Torah* can grow. It can indeed be, as its name indicates, a small sanctuary, a royal palace, that of the King of the world, according to the expression of tractate Megillah* 27a, which you will consult.

May Hashem cause all of this to be based on the love and fear of Hashem, to be penetrated thereby, for these sentiments are at the origin of what has just been set forth and ensure its perpetuity, as the Rambam* alludes to this, in his laws of the foundations of the Torah*, at the beginning of the chapter and as the holy Tanya* explains more precisely, at the beginning of chapter 4. We are in the weeks during which one reads, in the Torah*, the manner of putting into practice the Injunction: "They shall make Me a Sanctuary and I will dwell among them." Now, "it does not say: 'in it,' but: 'among them,'" that is to say within each Jew and you will consult, on this subject, the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "She who dwells in the gardens" of 5708 (note 7: 1948, of the Rebbe Rayatz*, in the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5708, from page 131). With my blessing of success in all that has just been said and in greeting all those who pray in this synagogue or in its vicinity, the members and, above all, the leaders,

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו הודעה אשר נתקבל לכהן בקדש, רבנות על טהרת הקדש בבית הכנסת, מקדש מעט, טו"ב רחוב ראדזיע במחנם הט' פאריז.

ויהי רצון אשר תהי' ההתמנות בשעה טובה ומוצלחת,

וכידוע בדיוק לשון הצלחה שהוא עוד למעלה מהמשוער,

היינו שיתרבה בכל עניני בית הכנסת, הן עניני תפלה הן בשיעורי תורה הנלמדים ברבים, וביחיד, וכידוע דרשת רז"ל על הכתוב, אוהב ה' שערי ציון מכל משכנות יעקב, שערים המצוינים בהלכה (ברכות ח, א).

ובפרט ע"פ הזכור לי משנים אשר הייתי דר בפאריז ומתפלל לעתים קבועים בביהכ"נ האמור, אשר מסוגל מקדש מעט זה לגדל בו גם תפלה וגם תורה, להיות מתאים לשמו, מקדש מעט, בית המלך מלכו של עולם (מגילה כז, א. עיי"ש).

ויהי רצון שיהי' כל האמור מיוסד וחדור אהבת ה' ויראת ה' שהן שרש וקיום כל הנ"ל כמרומז ברמב"ם הלכות יסודי התורה ריש פרק [ב] ומבואר יותר בספר תניא קדישא ריש פרק ד'.

והרי נמצאים אנו בשבועות, בהם קורין בתורה, אופן קיום הציווי, ועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוכם, בתוכו לא נאמר אלא בתוכם בתוך כאו"א מישראל (יעויין בזה ד"ה היושבת בגנים ה'תש"ח).

בברכת הצלחה בכל האמור ובפ"ש המתפללים החברים והגבאים בראשם של בית הכנסת וסביבותי' - שליט"א.
