I respond to your letter of 27 Teves*, which I received with much delay. At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, in conformity with what you write to me. You mention your bad thoughts, during study and prayer. The solution, in this matter, is well known (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 8278). A book or a Siddur* will be open before you, during this study or this prayer. For, the words seize the thought and retain it.

The assurance has been given to us (note 2: In tractate Megillah* 6a) that: "if one makes efforts, these are crowned with success" and you have the merit of being a student of the holy Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, founded and directed by our masters and leaders. It is therefore certain that, if you conduct your study with ardor and constancy, you will reveal the blessing of Hashem in all your needs. With my blessing to give good news of all of this,

לכתבו אודות מחשבות זרות בשעת הלימוד ותפלה, ידועה העצה לזה, אשר יהי' הספר או הסידור פתוח לפניו בעת הלימוד והתפלה, והאותיות אוחזות את המחשבה ותופסות אותה.

ומאחר שהובטחנו יגעת ומצאת, וזכה ללמוד בישיבה הק' תומכי תמימים, מיסודם ובהנהלתם של רבותינו נשיאינו, בודאי כשילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה ימשיך זה ברכת השי"ת בכל המצטרך לו.
