By the grace of Hashem,

12 Adar Rishon* 5722,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 15/2, in which you speak to me of your family and your origin. You tell me that you are pursuing your studies in a Chassidic* Yeshivah*. And, you specify that the image of Hashem appears evidently on your face (note 1: The addressee of this letter wears a beard), unlike those who conceive shame from it and who have recourse to various means in order to suppress and remove this image of Hashem. You ask me how to strengthen your study, all the more so since certain members of your family reproach you, on this subject. It is clear that all these reproaches emanate from the "old and foolish king," the evil inclination, which rises against the Holy One, blessed be He, against His Torah* and against His Mitzvos*, which wishes the animal soul of a Jew to prevail over his divine soul and which therefore strengthens this animal soul (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "animal soul," "man" and "calf") as well as those who make reproaches, in order to be followed, claiming that such must be the conduct of man. It is this same attitude that the evil inclination already adopted at the giving of the Torah*, by persuading to make the golden calf and to proclaim: "This is your deity, Israel," which Heaven forfend. And, it has disciples also in this generation!

From what has just been said, you will be able to deduce what your conduct must be, in the future. You will therefore continue what you have done until now, without taking into account the opinion of the relatives you mention. You will put into practice the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life and you will apply its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." It is on this path that a Jew can be truly happy, not with a supposed happiness that one experiences for a few minutes, but with a true happiness, both material and spiritual. P.S.: In order that it be easier to put into practice all that has just been said, in particular concerning the image of Hashem, it would be good for you to give a few cents to Tzedakah*, each day, before prayer. After prayer, including on Shabbos* and festivals, you will endeavor to recite Tehillim*, according to their monthly division.

במענה למכתבך מ 15/2-בו אתה כותב אודות משפחתך ,מוצאך,

ושאתה לומד בישיבה חסידית ,וצלם אלקים ניכר על פניך ]ולא כמו אלה

המתביישים בזה ,ונוקטים עצות שונות להוריד ולהסיר את הצלם

אלקים[ ,ושואל לדעתי בנוגע להמשך הלימוד וכו׳ ובפרט שלאחדים

מהמשפחה יש טענות אליך על כך.

מובן שכל הטענות באות מהמלך זקן וכסיל ,היצר הרע ,הלוחם נגד

הקב״ה תורתו ומצותיו ,ורוצה לגרום ליהודי שהנפש הבהמית תשלוט על

הנפש האלקית ,ומחזק כל כך את הנפש הבהמית )כמו אלו שיש להם

טענות( עד שרוצה לשכנוע שכך צריך להיות אדם .כך היתה ההנהגה שלו

מיד לאחר מתן תורה ,שהיצר הרע פיתה לעשות עגל ,ושהם יקראו אלה

אלקיך ישראל ר״ל ,ותלמידיו נמצאים גם בדור הזה.

מהאמור לעיל מובן ,כיצד צריכה להיות הנהגתך להבא -כפי

שהתנהגת עד עתה ,ולא כמו שהקרובים שאתה מזכיר ,אלא להתנהג על

פי הוראות תורתנו תורת חיים ,ולקיים את מצוותיה עליהם נאמר וחי

בהם ,שזו הדרך האמיתית שבה יהודי יכול להיות מאושר ,לא רק לכמה
