I greet you and bless you,

I received, with pleasure, the three volumes of your book, Emek HaNetziv* (note 2: "The Valley of the Leader"), following our discussion. I thank you for having thought of sending them to me and for the eagerness with which you did so. I hope that our conversation will have a concrete use, in all the points and domains we addressed, in particular concerning the words of the Torah*, since "they accomplished that to which they had committed" (note 3: They received the Torah* of their own free will, whereas it had been given to them under duress, near Mount Sinai*), so that: "for the Jews, there was light, joy, gladness and honor," in the simple sense and according to the interpretation of our Sages (note 4: In tractate Megillah* 16b): "The light is the Torah*." With my respects and my blessing for a joyous festival of Purim*,

The Jews have the custom of giving an opinion. I therefore permit myself to formulate the following few remarks on these books. It is, first of all, surprising that no specification was given about the manuscript itself. For example, has it been preserved in its entirety? Indeed, it seems that the commentary on the Sifri Devarim* (note 5: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "Sifri Devarim*") is not complete, from Parshas Ki Seitzei* onward. This is surprising for the author affirms, in the introduction of his commentary on the Sheilos*, volume 1, chapter 17, that he had by then already completed his commentary on the Sifri*.

Likewise, it is unfortunate that there is no index, which are "the handles of the basket," in the third volume. Even if the index of the first two volumes was written by the author himself, what he did not do, for whatever reason, at the end of his work, the drafting can, nevertheless, be done by others. I emphasize this point for two reasons:

A) Practice proves that a deficiency such as the lack of an index, references and notes, in particular in our generation, is an obstacle to the study, the deepening and perhaps even the reading of a book.

B) It is still possible to rectify all of this, at least partially, by publishing this index in an independent fascicle that will be appended to the third volume.

בנועם הנני לאשר קבלת ג' הכרכים "ספרי עמק הנציב" ג' חלקים, בהמשך לשיחתנו. ות"ח על שימת לבבו לשלחם אלי ובעד הזריזות בזה.

תקותי ששיחתנו תביא תועלת ממשית בכל הענינים והשטחים שדברנו, ובפרט בשטח ד"ת דקיימו מה שקבלו ובאופן דליהודים היתה אורה ושמחה וששון ויקר, כפשוטו וגם כדרשת חכמינו ז"ל אורה זו תורה וכו'.

בכבוד ובברכת חג פורים שמח.

כדרך בנ"י להביע חוו"ד, ארשה לי לבוא באיזו הערות בנידון הספרים הנ"ל, והן:

לפלא שלא ניתנו איזה פרטים על דבר הכת"י עצמו, אם נשמר כולו וכדומה. ובפרט אשר ב ספרי דברים כנראה לא נשלם הפירוש מתחיל מפ' תצא, והלא דבר הוא כיון שכמו שמובא בהקדמת המחבר לפירושו על השאלתות ח"א סי"ז הרי פירושו על הספרי כבר הי' גמור אתו.

כן חבל שבחלק ג' אין מפתחות, אזנים לקופה, שאפילו אם תמצא לומר

שהמפתחות דשני החלקים הקודמים נערכו בידי המחבר ומאיזו סיבה לא ערך מפתחות לסיום החיבור, הרי מלאכת מפתחות אפשר שתיעשה גם על ידי אחרים. והנני מדגיש נקודה זו משני טעמים: א) ידוע מהנסיון שכשחסרים מפתחות, ציונים ומראה מקומות וכו', הנה ליקוי זה ובדורנו בפרט מרחיק מהלימוד והעיון (ואפילו מקריאת?) הספר. ב) גם עתה אפשר לתקן הדבר, עכ"פ במקצתו - על ידי הדפסת המפתחות בעלון בפני עצמו ולצרפו לחלק הג'.

מצורף בזה קטע שנתפרסם זה עתה, ותקותי שכ' ימצא בו ענין.
