To the attention of Mr. Gideon Naor (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 8529),

I greet you and bless you,

After a long interruption, I received, with pleasure, your letter of 25 Adar Rishon*. I am particularly grateful to you for having taken the trouble to write to me about the evening, devoted to the Chabad* movement, which took place in your city of Kiryat Gat, all the more since, according to the information that has reached me, it was a success. Our people, in general, is pragmatic. This is not surprising for our Sages teach, in their Mishnah*, that: "the act is essential" (note 2: See the preceding letter). May Hashem therefore cause this fruitful evening to have an effect on the concrete, daily action of the residents of this city of our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. In this manner, this country will be worthy of the title accorded to it throughout the world, including by the other nations, that of "Holy Land." Thanks to your honorable functions and the capabilities that are yours, there is no doubt that your intervention can be decisive, in this matter. I hope that you will use your influence in the manner that is fitting.

We are on the morrow of the days of Purim*, when, according to the terms of the Megillah*, "for the Jews, there was light, joy, gladness and honor," in the simple sense and according to the explanation of our Sages (note 3: In tractate Megillah* 16b): "The light is the Torah*," which means that Jewish life can be illuminated and brilliant only to the extent that it conforms to the teachings of the Torah*, which is called: "Torah* of light." May Hashem cause it to be so in the lifetime of your fellow citizens, within all of Israel. With my respects and my blessing that you give me good news,

I deduced from your letter, with pain and much surprise, that the two Sifrei Torah* that were sent to you some time ago have not yet reached you (note 4: In a letter dated Rosh Chodesh* Menachem Av 5721 (1961), published in Tzaddik LaMelech*, volume 6, page 130, the Rebbe* wrote to Mr. Naor: "Immediately after our discussion, I began procedures to satisfy the needs of the synagogue of your city. For the time being, I have managed to procure, for you, two Sifrei Torah*, despite the difficulties, for the distribution of Sifrei Torah* is limited to certain administrations"). Perhaps this delay is due to the administrations. In any event, I immediately wrote to our representative in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt to ask him to clarify the situation and to expedite matters, to the extent possible.

שלום וברכה!

לאחר ההפסק הארוך, קבלתי בנועם מכתבו מכ"ה אדר א', ות"ח במיוחד בעד שימת לבבו לכתוב לי על דבר ערב המוקדש לתנועת חב"ד שנתקיים בעירו קרית גת, בפרט שעל פי הידיעות שקבלתי הי' מוצלח. וכיון שעמנו בכלל הוא עם מעשי, ואין פלא שהרי הורונו חכמינו ז"ל במשנתם, מעשה הוא העיקר, יהי רצון שערב המוצלח הנ"ל יומשך עד למעשה בפועל ובחיי היום-יום של דרי העיר אשר בארצנו הקדושה ת"ו, שיתאימו לתואר הנודע בכל קצוי תבל ואפילו בין אומות העולם - ארץ הקודש.

ובודאי אשר כ' במשרתו הנכבדה וכשרונותיו שחונן בהם יכול לפעול הרבה בכיוון האמור, ותקותי שמנצל השפעתו במילואה.

ובעמדנו למחרת יום הפורים, שאז, כסגנון המגילה, ליהודים היתה אורה ושמחה וששון ויקר, כפשוטו וכדרשת חכמינו ז"ל - אורה זו תורה, זאת אומרת, שאין חיי בני ישראל יכולים להיות מוארים ומאירים כי אם על ידי תיאומם להוראות התורה עלי' נאמר ותורה אור, יהי רצון שיהי' כן בחיי בני עירו בתוככי כלל ישראל.

בצער וגם בתימהון גדול הבנתי ממכתבו שעד עתה לא נמסרו שני הספרי תורה שנשלחו זה מכבר, ואולי נתעכבו על ידי המשרדים. בכל אופן כתבתי תיכף לעסקנינו אשר באה"ק ת"ו בבקשה לברר הדבר ולזרזו ככל האפשרי.

שני הספרי תורה: באגרת ר"ח מנ"א תשכ"א אליו (נדפסה בקו' "צדיק למלך" ו ע' 130) 15: והנה תיכף לאחרי שיתחנו התחלתי בהשתדלות בקשר עם צרכי בתי הכנסת בעירו, ולעת עתה הצלחתי להשיג עבורם ב' ספרי תורה, למרות הקשיים שבדבר, כיון שציוד ספרי תורה מצומצם למשרדים מיוחדים.
