By the grace of Hashem,

18 Nissan* 5722,

I bless you and greet you,

I respond to your letter of 12 Nissan* (note 1: This letter is addressed to a woman). According to its content, I have good hope that you feel and see to what extent your action and your help matter to the members of your family. Moreover, at the present time, after the passing of your husband, this role is increased tenfold. Naturally, you must contain your grief and your moral state, do all that is in your power to come to the aid of your close ones, not only the members of your family, but also all those who surround you, in general. Indeed, all Jews are close, even if, until now, you have not been accustomed to such an attitude.

Without doubt, the idea that there is in this a true satisfaction, the highest that can be, for the soul of the deceased, will instill in you the strength and the courage to act in this direction. This is, moreover, an Injunction of our holy Torah*, Torah* of life. Now, when the Torah* gives an order, it also provides the strength to put it into practice. It is clear that all beginnings are difficult, especially in such situations and in such a state of mind. As I have said, an Injunction of the Torah* is also a strength that is granted (note 3: To put it into practice), commensurate (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines: 'commensurate') with the difficulties. And, our Sages inform us (note 4: In tractate Yoma* 38b) that "one comes to the aid of the one who desires to purify himself." I would be happy to receive your good news. התקוה חזקה ע"פ תוכן מכתבה שלה, שמרגישה וגם רואה איך שנחוצה פעולתה ועזרתה לבני ביתה, ואדרבה עתה לאחרי פטירת בעלה ע"ה גדלה הנחיצות עוד יותר, וכמובן שתבליג על צערה ומצב רוחה ותעשה כל התלוי בה לעזר הקרובים, לא רק בני ביתה ממש, אלא הנמצאים בסביבתה בכלל, שהרי כל ישראל חברים ואפילו אם עד עתה לא הורגלה בזה, בודאי הרעיון אשר זהו נחת רוח אמיתי הכי נעלה שיכולה לגרום לנשמת הנפטר, תוסיף בה כח ועדוד לעשות בכל האמור, נוסף אשר זהו ציווי תורתנו הק' תורת חיים, והרי ציווי התורה הוא גם נתינת כח, ואף שמובן שכל התחלות קשות ובפרט במצבים כהנ"ל ובמצב רוח כהנ"ל, הרי כאמור ציווי השי"ת הוא גם נתינת כח בערך הקישוים, וכבר הודיעונו חכמנו ז"ל אשר הבא לטהר מסייעין אותו, וינעם לי להתבשר טוב בזה...
