To the Rav, distinguished and agreeable Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Chaim Dov, who is called Doctor Mental (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 8224),

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with pleasure, your book Studies in the History of the Sanhedrin (note 2: Studies on the history of the Sanhedrin). My time did not allow me to consult it, even quickly. I nevertheless wished to acknowledge receipt of it, all the more so since, at first glance, one can note that you invested much effort in it. Likewise, to pass from one idea to another while remaining in the same context, I hope that you will also invest much effort in your students. Moreover, I recently learned that the worldview adopted by the young people around you must be considerably improved and, above all, scrupulously monitored. Naturally, this is only a rumor. It emanates, however, from a source that, until now, has proven faithful.

It is said (note 3: In tractate Avodah Zarah* 3a) that: "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with treachery toward His creatures." Together with a function and a responsibility, Hashem therefore also grants the necessary forces (note 4: To assume them). However, one must still use them and may Hashem cause you to succeed in this with vitality, enthusiasm, as Chassidus* demands, in all domains of holiness. The Holy One, blessed be He, acts (note 5: According to the Midrash* on the verse Shemos* 3, 6) "measure for measure" (note 6: In the manner in which one acts toward Him), but in widely increased proportion. May Hashem cause you to observe the blessing also in what concerns you personally, both materially and spiritually. With my respects and my blessing,

שלום וברכה!

בנועם הנני לאשר קבלת ספרו "סטאדיס אין דהי היסטארי אוו דהי סנהדרין". ואף שלא הי' הזמן גרמא לעיין בו אפילו בחפזה, אמרתי לאשר קבלתו, ובפרט אשר גם בהשקפה ראשונה ניכר שהשקיע בו רוב עמל.

ועל דרך זה, מענין לענין באותו ענין, תקותי שמשקיע עמל רב גם במושפעיו, בפרט שלאחרונה קבלתי ידיעות אשר המצב בנוגע להשקפת עולם בין הנוער בסביבתו דורש תיקון רב, ובעיקר השגחה מעולה. כמובן אין זו אלא שמועה, אבל מוצאה ממקור שע"ע אפשר הי' לסמוך עליו.

וכיון שאין הקב"ה בא בטרוניא עם בריותיו, הרי ביחד עם התפקיד והאחריות נותנים מלמעלה כוחות מתאימים, ורק שצריך להוציאם מהכח אל הפועל. ויהי רצון שיעשה בזה מתוך חיות והתלהבות, וכדרישת תורת החסידות בכל עניני קדושה.

ומדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה, כמה פעמים ככה, ויהי רצון שיראה ברכה גם בעניניו הפרטיים, בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.
