To Mr. Chaim, who is called Doctor Shashkes (note 1: See, regarding him, letters no. 5093 and 7479),

I greet you and bless you,

I make reference to your voyage destined to visit our brethren, the children of Israel of the diaspora. This surely has as its objective to strengthen their morale by reinforcing their bond with the Jews in other places and to transmit the greetings of one to the other, emphasizing that the people of Israel is alive, that its Torah* is a Torah* of life, that its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them," were given by the Elokim* of life. May Hashem therefore cause you to know success in this function, that you observe the positive fruit of your effort, that you accomplish all of this in good health and with enthusiasm. Of course, I will be happy to learn, when the time comes, what will have resulted from your voyage and to have good news of the places you visited.

To pass from one subject to another, you have just turned seventy years, for long days and good years. May Hashem therefore cause that, for many years still, you act for the good of the Jews, both material and spiritual, for these two dimensions are linked. One knows the explanation of the Admur HaZaken* (note 2: See, on this subject, letters no. 7718, 8353, 8486, 8564, 8567 and 8572), author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, on the definition of our people as: "a unique nation on the earth." He emphasizes, indeed, that the Jews demonstrate the Unity of Hashem including on the earth and in material domains. With my respects and my blessing,

אשר בודאי הכוונה היא לעודד את רוחם ע"י חיזוק הקשר עם בני ישראל הנמצאים במקומות אחרים, והבאת פ"ש מאלו לאלו ביחד עם ההדגשה אשר עם ישראל חי ותורתו תורת חיים ומצותי' עליהן נאמר וחי בהן הנתונה מאלקים חיים.

יהי רצון שיצליח במילוי תפקיד האמור, יראה פרי טוב בעמלו, ויפעול בזה מתוך בריאות וטוב לבב.

ובודאי ובודאי ינעם לי להוודע בעתו ובזמנו מתוצאות נסיעתו ובקבלת ידיעות טובות מהמקומות אשר ביקר.

ומענין לענין, לרגלי מלאת לו שבעים שנה לארך ימים ושנים טובות,

יהי רצון מהשי"ת אשר עוד רבות בשנים יפעול לטובת בני ישראל בגשם וברוח אשר יחדיו יהלכון,

וכידוע פירוש רבנו הזקן, בעל התניא והשו"ע, בתואר עמנו אשר גוי אחד בארץ הם, שממשיכים האחדות - אחדות ה' - גם בארץ ובענינים ארציים.
