Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8452 — Tzedakah

At the birth of a girl, our custom (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 7641) consists of giving her a name at the next reading of the Torah* (note 2: The one that immediately follows the birth). And, he who desires to delay the attribution of the name, which is the source of the vitality of the one who bears it, must still bring proof that he indeed has the right to do so. Our Sages say (note 3: In tractate Avodah Zarah* 27a) that: "a woman must be considered as having received the circumcision" and it is clear that this is so from her birth (note 4: For this reason, one waits for the circumcision for a boy, whereas the name must be given as soon as possible for a girl).

I have seen what the Taamei HaMinhagim* says on this subject, but we do not take responsibility regarding rumors.

... מנהגנו לקרות שם לבת שנולדה - בקרה"ת הכי קרובה. והרוצה לאחר קריאת השם, שהוא חיות האדם - עליו להביא ראי'. והרי אמרז"ל דאשה כמאן דמהילא דמיא, ופשיטא שהכוונה תיכף בלידתה.
