Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8460 — Prayer

By the grace of Hashem,

7 Tammuz* 5722,

Brooklyn,

To the young Binyamin Yosef,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 27 Sivan*. At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned in prayer so that the wish of your heart be fulfilled. Just as you have transmitted this request to me, may Hashem cause you to give me good news of it. Furthermore, I have good hope that it is unnecessary to explain to you at length the following point.

Indeed, in conformity with the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, a man must draw from everything he sees or hears a teaching for the service of the Creator. In this case, you must reason to yourself the following a fortiori argument. In the milieu in which you evolve (note 1: In the army), one obeys the instructions of a man of flesh and blood without questioning them, without seeking the reasons and the explanations. How much more must this be so for the Injunction of the Supreme King, the Holy One, blessed be He! Indeed, the act is essential and daily conduct must therefore conform to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, and to the practice of the Mitzvos* of which it is said (note 2: Yechezkel* 20, 11 and 13, 21): "One shall live by them." With my blessing to give me good news of all this and greetings to your friends,

בעת רצון יזכירוהו בתפלה למילוי משאלות לבבו, ויהי רצון שכשם שהביא הבקשה כן יודיע בשורה טובה בהאמור.

והתקוה חזקה שלמותר להאריך [וע"פ הוראת הבעל שם טוב הידועה, שמכל ענין שאדם רואה ושומע - עליו ללמוד ממנו בעבודתו לקונו, הרי גם] עליו ללמוד במכש"כ וק"ו: ומה בנוגע לפקודת בשר ודם, הרי [בסביבה בה נמצא] מקיימים הפקודה מבלי להרהר אחרי' ומבלי לחפש טעמים ונמוקים וכו'

עאכו"כ בנוגע - להבדיל - לפקודת מלך מה"מ הקב"ה והמעשה הוא העיקר, הנהגה בחיי היום יומים מתאימה להוראות תורתנו תורת חיים ובקיום מצותי' עליהן נאמר וחי בהם.
