the month of Menachem* Av* 5722,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several people. See, on this subject, letter no. 8483). We find ourselves "between the afflictions" (note 2: Between the fasts of 17 Tammuz* and 9 Av*. The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Reshimos* on Eichah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, paragraph 277, in the Or HaTorah*, Nach*, volume 2, page 1036, which says: 'They overtook her between the afflictions'") and, moreover, in proximity to the month of Menachem* (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "It is well known and established that the month of Av is also called Menachem, according to the Get Pashut*, chapter 129, paragraph 35, as well as the Knesses HaGedolah* on the Even HaEzer*, paragraph 26 and Beis Yosef*, paragraph 41") Av*. May our Father Who is in the heavens Himself console all His people Israel, precisely Himself (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the Pesikta*, cited by the Tosafos*, tractate Megillah* 31b"), as it is said: "It is I, I Who will console you," with a consolation that will be "double for the sagacity" (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Midrash* Eichah Rabbah*, at the end of chapter 1. See also the Pesikta* of Rav Kahana*, paragraph: 'It is I, I' and the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Nitzavim*, page 48a"), both materially and spiritually, until we obtain the good that is visible and tangible before our eyes of flesh, here below, in a concrete manner.

The preparation and the introduction to all of this is the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 6: Of Chassidus*) outward, in conformity with the terms of the well-known holy epistle (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Published, in several editions, as an introduction to the Likkutei Amarim* of the Maggid* of Mezeritch*." See the beginning of the Keser Shem Tov*) of our master, the Baal Shem Tov*, whose memory is a blessing. With my blessing to give good news of your success in your sacred mission,

ויהי רצון אשר בעמדנו בין המצרים, וביחד עם זה בסמיכות לחדש מנחם אב, אשר אבינו שבשמים ינחם את כל עמו ישראל, דוקא בעצמו, כאמור, אנכי אנכי הוא מנחמכם, ובנחמה בכפלים לתושי', בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד, ועד לטוב הנראה ונגלה לעיני בשר, למטה מעשרה טפחים.

והרי ההכנה והקדמה לזה, הוא הפצת המעינות חוצה, וכאגרת הקדש הידועה למורנו הבעש"ט ז"ל.
