I greet and bless you,

I duly received your letter some time ago, and because of my many occupations, I have not been able to respond to it until now.

You ask me, in your letter, whether you may come to the United States — which is now easier. Nevertheless, you intend to devote yourself to study and you are looking for a position as rosh yeshiva*.

In general, it is particularly difficult to become a rosh yeshiva* in the United States. It is even more arduous to obtain assurance of one in advance. This requires search and effort on the spot.

Obviously, if such is your will, and if you have the possibility of studying the proposals in this direction by means of letters that you will send from Paris, you may try to do so — but in my view, the chances of success are very slim.

By contrast, it is relatively easier to settle here as an experienced shochet* of poultry or cattle, and this can have a positive outcome — though it imposes upon you the requirement of living far from the big cities. If you are capable of doing this and if it interests you, it would be good to take the steps to settle in the United States.

May Hashem guide you on the straight path, so that you may satisfy your desires — those of a Jewish man, emanating from your G-dly soul, as Chassidus* explains, citing the Rambam, who affirms at the end of the second chapter of the Laws of Divorce that the deepest will of a Jew — that is, his desire — is exclusively the practice of the Torah and the Mitzvos*.

מכתבו קבלתי לפני איזה זמן ומרוב הטרדות לא הגיע התור לענות עליו עד עתה.

שואל במכתבו אשר מכיון שהוקל מעט הנסיעה לאה"ב, אם ישתדל לנסוע לכאן, אך רצונו להסתדר רק בתור יושב אהל, בתור ראש ישיבה.

הנה בכלל ההסתדרות כאן, בתור ראש ישיבה וכיו"ב, קשה היא ביותר, ובפרט להיות בטוח בזה מקדם, כי ענין כזה דורש חיפוש והשתדלות יתרה על אתר. מובן, אשר אם רצונו ויש ביכלתו לברר האפשריות בזה על ידי מכתבים מפאריז, יכול לנסות, אבל מסופקני אם יעלה בידו.

לאידך גיסא ההסתדרות פה בתור שוחט עופות וגסות אומן, קלה היא לפי ערך, ומשתלמת בכי טוב, אלא שלזה אפשר שצריך יהי' לדור בערי השדה. ואם מסוגל לזה ורצונו בכך, אזי נכון הדבר שישתדל בדבר ניירות לאה"ב. והוי' ינחנו בדרך הישר שיגיע למחוז חפצו, חפצו של איש הישראלי שהוא חפצו של נפשו האלקית כמובא בדא"ח מרמב"ם הל' גרושין ספ"ב, אשר פנימיות רצונו של איש יהודי, שזהו הנקרא חפץ, הוא אך ורק תורה ומצות.
