Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8518 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 22 · Letter 301
By the grace of Hashem,
19 Elul* 5722,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter, with what was enclosed. You briefly describe to me what your life has been. Of course, there is no reason to excuse yourself and, in the future, you may continue to write to me whenever it will be necessary. Nevertheless, Hashem is the Essence of the good and it is in the nature of the One Who is good to do good. May He therefore cause that in the future the content of your letters be joyous and beneficial, of a visible and tangible manner. As for the content of this one, I hope that upon receiving the present letter, your morale will already be better.
However, a man is not exempt from doing all that depends on him, according to the ways of nature. Now, many situations are similar to yours, in particular in our era. No doubt you consult a specialist in this matter and you conform to his prescriptions. But, above all, you must meditate upon the existence of the Creator of the world, Who directs it. Concretely, one can observe that this world is not left to itself, that it has a Master, that the minerals, constituting the major part of what surrounds us, are in perfect order. One is compelled to conclude that this order exists even in the most infinitesimal particles and that the same is true for man. One cannot claim that he is disordered, that chaos reigns therein.
Furthermore, such is also the scientific approach, according to which a law that explains an event at 99% must necessarily also be verified for the remaining 1%, even if one has not experimented it or if one has not been able to verify it. And, an immediate conclusion results from this: in the end, it is indeed the good and order that prevail. This observation encourages, raises the morale. In a passing manner, the good can remain hidden by such event or such pain. But, it is certain that man receives the forces necessary to overcome all of this, provided he is willing to do so. However, the nature of creation requires that one modify a situation only step by step, rather than by a passage from one extreme to the other, in a single time. You tell me that you have a scientific training and activity. By meditating upon all this, you will surely be comforted by it. You will strengthen your self-confidence and your optimism. And, this will give you eagerness, will improve your situation. But, once again, one must advance step by step.
If, at every moment, one needs the blessing of the Creator of man, Who directs him, Hashem, blessed be He, how much more is this the case in such a situation. One then needs an increased blessing, a particular blessing. The channel and the receptacle allowing one to obtain it are a daily conduct that conforms to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, and to the practice of its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." And, it matters not whether one understands the relationship that exists between this conduct and the blessing or not. This can be compared to the improvement of the physical state through medical treatment. It is not necessary that the patient understand in what manner it heals him, especially when the recovery only intervenes later. It therefore suffices to take these medications. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more. I await good news of all this. Indeed, these days are favorable, belonging to Elul*, the month of mercy and good will. With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, as well as to give good news,
