This (note 1: The addressee of this letter asked the Rebbe* whether a man must necessarily suffer here below, by imposing constraints upon himself) is not ineluctable (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "ineluctable," "life," "can," "you shall choose" and "force granted"), for the Torah* of life makes known that, each day, one must and one can leave Egypt. However, a gift was offered to the children of Israel and to them alone, which enables them to identify with the Creator. They possess, indeed, free will and the Holy One, blessed be He, wished that the exodus from Egypt also pass through this gift, through the free choice of man, as it is said: "And, you shall choose life," which is an Injunction, but also a force granted to achieve it, an assurance given. Consequently, as I told you, choose therefore the true life, all the more so since the children of Israel have no alternative. I allude to that of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. In this way, you will know success more easily and more broadly than what you anticipate. No one can be objective about himself and you will therefore present all of this to the administration of Tomchei Temimim* (note 3: The addressee of this letter is a student of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*). Then, you will conform to what you will be told, in joy and enthusiasm.

אינו בהחלט - כיון שתורת חיים מודיעה שבכל יום ויום צ"ל ואפשרית יצי"מ.

אלא שנתינה לבנ"י דוקא - מתנה, שבה דומים לבוראם - ענין הבחירה. ורצה הק' שגם יצי"מ הנ"ל תהי' דוקא ע"י מתנה זו - בבחירת האדם, וכמש"נ: ובחרת בחיים (הוראה וגם נתינת כח והבטחה). א"כ, כנ"ל, יבחר בחיים האמתיים (והבלעדיים - בנוגע לבנ"י) חיי תומ"צ, ויצליח בנקל יותר ובמדה גדולה יותר מאשר משער. - וכיון שאדם קרוב אצל עצמו - יפרט ענינו לפני הנהלת תו"ת ויעשה כהוראתם בשמחה וט"ל.
