To the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav Meir HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessings,

In reply to your letter of 10 Kislev. I learned with pleasure of the fruitful work you are doing in the area of proper chinuch*. You will surely redouble your efforts in this area. Our Sages say[2]: "Open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle, and I will open for you an opening like the entrance to the Heichal*." When one begins the action and makes an effort here below, one receives Hashem's help in the strongest manner, so that the accomplishments are positive and the efforts are rewarded.

I read the request for blessing and the list which were enclosed with your letter, as you asked, at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on the eve of Rosh Chodesh* Teves. The Tzaddik* who departs this world is found there more than during his lifetime. He has surely given his blessing, and Hashem will fulfill it, materially and spiritually.

I conclude by extending my blessing for the entrance of your son Shlomo into cheder*. May you merit to raise him to Torah, chuppah*, and good deeds, in expansive measure, as Chassidus* explains. And may there be fulfilled in him what the Midrash* Tanchuma says, in Parshas Kedoshim, on the verse "and you shall plant all manner of fruit trees," which applies its terms to a child.

Then, "in the fourth year, its fruit shall be holy," and his father will then be able to initiate him into study, for the honor of Hashem. Finally, "in the fifth year, you shall eat its fruit," as soon as he begins to read the Torah, "adding to the produce of the field."

Our Sages derive from this verse that the child begins to study the Written Torah at the age of five. You will also consult the beginning of the laws of Torah study by the Alter Rebbe, and the Likkutei Torah commenting on this verse.

Enclosed please find the kuntres* published on the occasion of Chanukah, with the collective letter that accompanies it. It reaches you a little late, but in fact its content applies throughout the year.

אסיים בברכתי להכנסת בנו שלמה שי' לחדר - שיזכו לגדלו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים מתוך הרחבה וכפי שנתבאר בתורת החסידות, ויקויים בו מש"כ במדרש תנחומא פ' קדושים עה"פ ונטעתם כל עץ מאכל, מדבר בתינוק כו', ובשנה הרביעית יהי' כל פריו קדש שאביו מקדישו לתורה, הילולים להוי' מהו הילולים משעה שמהלל הקב"ה ובשנה החמישית תאכלו את פריו משעה שמתחיל לקרות בתורה, להוסיף לכם תבואתו - מכאן שנו רבותינו בן חמש שנים למקרא כו'. ועייג"כ הל' ת"ת לרבינו הזקן בתחילתו, ובלקו"ת על הפסוק הנ"ל.
