of the synagogue, and of Mr. Yehudah Eliezer Mishkin,

director of the committee, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with pleasure, your letter announcing good news since a public celebration will take place this Sunday, the 23rd of Shevat*, on the occasion of the rabbinical appointment, until one hundred and twenty years, of your Rav and spiritual guide, well-known and distinguished, the Rav David Dov Hollander Shlita*.

This news procured me a particular satisfaction for, on the one hand, Rav Hollander merits this honor and this distinction, on the other hand, Hashem has granted him the success of assuming functions within a prestigious synagogue, of leading on the path of the Torah* and the Mitzvos* an important and quality community, whose leaders and members know how to appreciate, in the fitting manner, their Rav and spiritual guide. They are conscious of the merit that is granted to them of having such a chief.

How much more is this the case in our era and in this country. To our great sorrow, the confusion therein is great, the limits and the values are called into question, to the point, as the prophet Yeshayahu* 5, 20 says, of defining evil as good and good as evil, of making darkness pass for light and light for darkness, bitterness for sweetness and sweetness for bitterness.

My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, when he arrived in the United States, warned (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 157) against an idea, then widespread although mendacious, according to which America would be different from all other countries, would not be a place of Torah* and Mitzvos*. Furthermore, not only did he reject this fallacious affirmation, but, in addition, he enunciated several of its qualities. In this country, our brethren the children of Israel live in conditions and in a very favorable moment, from different points of view. It follows that an important effort is necessary to disseminate and strengthen the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, for proper education. All depends only on determination, enthusiasm, and collaboration between, on the one hand, the Rabbanim* and the spiritual guides, on the other hand, the leaders and the members of the communities, faithful to their objective and to their function. The important achievements, during the last twenty years, have proven that his affirmation was founded and exact.

My blessing is addressed to your dear Rav, filled with eagerness, of multiple accomplishments, the Rav David Dov Hollander Shlita*, as well as to all the leaders of the synagogue, to the members of the community, so that all may have but a single shoulder (note 2: May all be united) on the path that ascends to the house of Hashem, to strengthen and reinforce your community, so that it be in conformity, in every point, with the name that the Tradition of Israel gives it: "holy community." As the Admur HaZaken* underlines (note 3: Tanya*, at chapter 2), author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, whose one hundred and fiftieth since the passing this year is, the Rav and the members of the community are compared to the head and to the other members of the body. Of course, all together form a single entity, a living, active, healthy, and whole body.

According to the Injunction: "You shall love your fellow as yourself," which is a great principle of the Torah*, I have good hope that your community will give the example, that it will be a source of positive influence for the other synagogues and that it will be widely imitated. May Hashem cause you to know successive elevations, with breadth of spirit, in joy and enthusiasm. With my respects and my blessing to all the participants in this celebration, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years,

בנועם קבלתי מכתבם מבשר טוב אשר ביום א' הבע"ל כ"ג שבט תתקיים חגיגה פומבית בקשר עם מסירת כתב רבנות עד מאה ועשרים שנה לכבוד רבם ומנהיגם הרוחני המפורסם והמצויין הרב דוד דוב שליט"א הולנדר.

קורת רוח מיוחדת גרמה לי הבשורה הנ"ל, שמחד - ראוי הוא הרב הולנדר לכל הכבוד והיקר הזה, ומאידך - שהצליחו השי"ת לכהן פאר בבית כנסת נכבד ולנהל על מימי התורה והמצוה קהילה חשובה ובעלת קומה, אשר מנהלי' וחברי' יודעים להעריך כדבעי את רבם ומנהלם הרוחני ומכירים בהצלחתם שזכו לרב ומנהיג כמוהו.

ובפרט בתקופתנו ומדינתנו זו, שלדאבוננו הגדול, רב בה טשטוש הגבולים והערכים עד, כלשון הנביא, שאומרים לרע טוב ולטוב רע, שמים חשך לאור ואור לחשך, שמים מר למתוק ומתוק למר (ישעי' ה, כ).

וכבר התריע כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר מיד בבואו לארצות הברית נגד הרעיון הנפרץ שבשקר יסודו כאילו אמריקה משונה מכל הארצות ושאינה מקום תורה ומצוה וכו'.

ואדרבה, לא רק ששלל בהחלט הנחה כוזבת זו, אלא הצביע על כמה מעלות טובות שיש לאחינו בני ישראל בארץ זו ואשר תנאי המקום וצו השעה מוכשרים ביותר מכמה בחינות, ומחייבים עבודה נרחבה בשטח הרבצת והחזקת התורה והמצווה וחינוך הכשר, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצון ובמרץ ובשיתוף פעולה שבין הרבנים ומנהיגי הרוח עם עסקני הציבור והבעלי-בתים הנאמנים לתעודתם ותפקידם. וההישגים החשובים במשך עשרים השנה האחרונות הוכיחו שסיסמתו היתה מיוסדת ונתאמתה.

ברכתי שלוחה לרבם הנכבד בעל מרץ ורב פעלים הרב דוד דוב שליט"א הולנדר ולכל מנהלי ביהכ"נ ובני עדתם שיחיו, שילכו שכם אחד בדרך העולה בית א-ל לחזק ולבסס את קהילתם שתתאים בכל הפרטים לשמה המסורתי של קהילה

בישראל - "קהילא קדישא". וכמו שהדגיש רבינו הזקן בעל התניא והשולחן ערוך, אשר השנה היא שנת הק"נ להסתלקותו, שהרב ובני הקהילה הם בדוגמת ראש ושאר חלקי הגוף, שמובן שדוקא שניהם ביחד הם דבר שלם, גוף חי ופעיל בריא ושלם.

ועל יסוד הציווי ואהבת לרעך כמוך שהוא כלל גדול בתורה, תקותי חזקה שקהלתם תשמש דוגמא חי' ומקור השפעה טובה בשביל שאר בתי כנסיות ומהם יראו ויעשו. ויהי רצון שילכו מחיל אל חיל מתוך הרחבת הדעת ובשמחה ובטוב לבב.
