with eagerness, has good conduct,

the Rav Menachem Ben Tzion (note 1: Rav M. B. T. Saks. See, regarding him, letters no. 4024 and 5112),

director of the relief fund of Chicago,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 6 Iyar*, to which was attached the participation of the relief fund of Chicago. I thank you and your friends, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years, for your annual participation in the work of rescue of our brothers, the children of Yisrael* who are on the other continent. Nevertheless, I will not hide my pain at seeing that in a period like this, the grant has been reduced, this year again. Indeed, the action is expanding, as you know, particularly at the present time, with the refugees from Algeria.

May Hashem therefore grant you success so that the collection of the relief fund of Chicago recovers its strength, so that it puts into practice the opinion of Beis Hillel*, according to which one goes in the direction of increase (note 2: Permanently increasing the number of lights of Chanukah*. See the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*). The merit of that which is public will come to your aid. On the occasion of Shavuos*, the time of the giving of our Torah*, which approaches, for us and for all of Yisrael*, for good and for blessing, I wish to you and to your friends, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years, according to the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner, and then to preserve it throughout the year. You will surely ask your collaborators to indicate the books that you are missing and those that you are requesting. They will be gladly sent to you, for the greater good of all.

הנני לאשר קבלת המכתב כת"ר מיום ו' אייר, בצירוף תרומת קרן הצלה דשיקגו.

ות"ח לכת"ר וחבריו שליט"א בעד השתתפות השנתית בעבודת ההצלה למען אחינו בני ישראל מעבר לים.

ברם לא אעלים בעתות כאלו שמצטער אני על שהעזר נפחת גם השתא, בה בשעה שכידוע העבודה הולכת ומתרחבת, ובפרט עתה בקשר עם פליטי אלג'יר וכו'.

ויהי רצון שחפץ ה' בידם יצליח להשיב מגבית קרן הצלה דשיקגו לאיתנה ולקיים הלכה כבית הילל מוסיף והולך, וזכות הרבים מסייעתם.

ולקראת חג השבועות, זמן מתן תורתנו, הבא עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה, הנני לאחל לכת"ר וחבריו שליט"א - בנוסח הברכה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר - קבלת התורה בשמחה ובפנימיות ולהמשיך בכל השנה כולה.
