In response to his question in his letter dated 7/10 regarding what is brought in several books on the matter of gilgul neshamos* (the transmigration of souls), and particularly and at length in the writings of the Arizal*, and the relationship of the teachings of chassidus to this.
Now, the matter of gilgulim is found in several of our holy books even before the Arizal, as is indicated in the footnote,* although the authority of the Arizal alone is more than sufficient. And it is understood that this matter was accepted both in the teachings of chassidus and by the Vilna Gaon and his students — who, although they opposed the teachings of chassidus, etc., nevertheless, as mentioned above, the matter is accepted [by them]. This is so despite the fact that some of the Jewish philosophers, also in the Middle Ages, did not accept this idea for various reasons that this is not the place to detail.
On this occasion I take the liberty of enclosing a copy of my general letter for this year, which I hope will interest you.

שלום וברכה!
במענה לשאלתו במכתבו מיום /10;7amp& בנוגע להמובא בכמה ספרים ענין גלגול נשמות ובפרט ובאריכות בכתבי האריז"ל, ויחס תורת החסידות לזה.
והנה ענין הגלגולים נמצא בכמה מספרנו הק' גם שלפני האריז"ל וכמצוין בשולי הגליון*, אף שמספיק די והותר גם הסמכות של האריז"ל, ומובן אשר ענין זה נתקבל הן בתורת החסידות והן אצל הגר"א מוילנא ותלמידיו, אף שהתנגדו לתורת החסידות וכו' כנ"ל מקובל הדבר למרות שאחדים מחוקרי ישראל וגם בימי הבינים לא נתקבל אצלם הרעיון מכמה סיבות, שאין כאן המקום לפורטם.
בהזדמנות זו ארשה לי לצרף העתק מכתבי הכללי לשנה זו אשר התקוה שיענין את מר.
