To the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav A. T.[1], the shochet*,

Greetings and blessings,

You are doubtless aware of the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[2], which he repeated on various occasions in his sichos*: a shochet* is not merely a man holding a knife in his hand. He must also exert a positive influence on the city in which he resides, turn it away from the attractions of the body and of the nefesh habahamis*, and bring it close to the Almighty by inspiring in it ahavas Hashem*, ahavas haTorah*, and ahavas Yisroel*. And our Sages[3] say that "to perform shechita* means to draw close."

So it is in the most literal sense. Shechita* has the purpose of permitting consumption. Thus the flesh of the animal or the fowl is merged with that of man, who is created in the image of Hashem. Indeed, "beloved are the children of Israel, who are called sons of Hashem."

Fortunate is he who brings about closeness between the son and the Father, especially when it concerns a son so honorable and a Father so glorious. And great is this merit, which enables one to obtain all good, the satisfaction of all needs, material and spiritual.

...בטח שמע מפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע הכ"מ אשר אמר כמה פעמים בשיחותיו הק', אשר השוחט אינו איש ומאכלת בידו - סקאטאבאיעץ - אלא תפקידו להשפיע על העיר שבה נמצא, למשכה מעניני הגוף ונפש הבהמית ולקרבה להשי"ת ע"י אהבת ה' אהבת התורה ואהבת ישראל, וכמאמר רז"ל אין ושחט אלא ומשך.

וכמו שהוא ג"כ בפשטות, אשר ע"י השחיטה, שכאשר ישנו וזבחת אז יוכל להיות ואכלת, הנה נהפך בשר הבהמה ועוף להיות דם ובשר אדם, מל' אדמה לעליון, כי חביבים ישראל שנקראו בנים למקום וחיבה יתרה נודעת להם שנקראו בנים למקום, ואשרי האיש הגורם קירוב בין הבן והאב, ובפרט אזיינע טייערע קינדער און אזא טייערער פאטער. וגדולה זכות זו להשפיע עליו כל טוב, בכל המצטרך לו בגשמיות וברוחניות.
