Igrot Kodesh · Letter 89 — Tisha B'Av — Baseless Hatred, Torah Study, and the Path to Rebuilding the Temple

To the responsible and ardent man of multiple accomplishments,

I greet you and bless you,

I thank you for having sought to obtain news of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. His state of health is as usual. It is clear that the heat of this period is the cause of his weakness. It is a pity that he has not yet been able to go to the countryside to rest from his many occupations.

He Who heals all flesh will no doubt strengthen his health and he will grow stronger and stronger, as all our friends and the Chassidim wish.

I thank you for your check of 112.5 dollars, intended for the publication of the discourses of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, delivered during the holiday of Pesach [2].

We have received the same sum from our dear Rav Y. Katz and we are therefore transmitting the manuscripts to the printer. As soon as they are published, we will send them to you.

Besides my thanks, I would also like to express my blessing of Mazal Tov*. You have, indeed, just acquired a great merit by participating in this publication. With the help of Hashem, you will illuminate the soul of a great number of Jews through the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, and these people will be led toward the Torah, prayer and good deeds.

Commenting on the events that occurred during these days, during the month of Menachem Av [3], our Sages say that the First Temple was destroyed because one had turned away from the Torah, to which the Jews, even if they studied it, did not accord all its importance. The Second Temple, on the other hand, was destroyed because of baseless hatred.

The holiness of the First Temple was complete, whereas the Second lacked the Holy Ark. Now, the First Temple was built by Shlomo [4], who received this name because peace, Shalom [5], and tranquility reigned during his lifetime, including with the peoples that his father David had fought.

Such a situation is therefore the antithesis of baseless hatred.

Moreover, Shlomo taught the Torah to the people and he fostered the fear of Hashem so that the people would attach themselves to the Torah, as the Sages report.

Such a situation is therefore the antithesis of an abandonment of the Torah.

In every era and in every place, one who performs an action for the good of all, through the feeling of love of one's fellow that animates him and without seeking personal interest, by strengthening the Torah and Judaism, hastens our redemption and the rebuilding of the Temple by our righteous Moshiach, who, he too, will manifest himself, from the moment of his coming, only through peace.

והרופא לכל בשר בטח יחון בריאותו, וילך הלוך וטוב כאו"נ כל ידידנו ואנ"ש שיחיו.

נוספת על התודה ברכת מזל טוב, על שזכה בענין חשוב כזה, להיות מן המזכים את הרבים, להאיר בע"ה את נפשם באור דברי כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א, ולהתעורר עי"ז לתורה, לעבודה ולגמילות חסדים.

במאורעות ימים אלו דחדש מנחם אב, אמרו רז"ל בסיבת החורבן, אשר בית ראשון חרב על מאסה של תורה שלא היתה חשובה בעיני ישראל שבדור ההוא אף שעסקו בה (בבא מציעא פה, ב), ובית שני חרב על עון שנאת חנם (יומא ט, ב).

ולכן מצינו אשר בנין בית מקדש ראשון

- שהיתה קדושתו שלמה, משא"כ בית שני שחסרו בו ארון וכו' (יומא כא, ב) -

נבנה דוקא ע"י שלמה , אשר שלמה הי' שמו כי שלום ושקט הי' בימיו (דה"י כב, ט) אפילו עם אותם העמים אשר נלחם עמהם דוד אביו

- היפך בתכלית משנאת חנם -

וגם לימד תורה את העם והשתדל ע"י ענינים של יראת שמים שיאחזו ישראל בתורה כסיפור רז"ל (עירובין כא, ב)

- היפך בתכלית ממאסה של תורה -

ובכל זמן ומקום הנה כל איש העושה פעולה לזכות את הרבים, מפני אהבת ישראל שבקרבו חנם בלי פני', ובפרט פעולה המביאה סוף כל סוף לחיזוק התורה והיהדות מקרבת גאולתינו ובנין בית המקדש ע"י משיח צדקינו, אשר גם הוא כשיבוא אינו פותח אלא בשלום (ויקרא רבה ספ"ט).
