devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I read with consternation, in your letter, that there was a fire in your apartment. I do not know whether you possess the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek. I therefore reproduce here an excerpt, appearing on page 228, from a letter of the Tzemach Tzedek, that deals with this subject:

"Here is what a manuscript of my grandfather[2] says:

"Men of great holiness reported to me that after a fire, one becomes wealthy. Indeed, the order of the Heavenly attributes is the following: chesed*, gevurah*, rachamim*. After gevurah* has been exercised through a fire, rachamim* is aroused, which transcends the initial chesed*. Rachamim* is the attribute of Yaakov, the inheritance which surpasses all limits and goes through from end to end."

You will also consult, in Me'ah She'arim, the letters of the Mitteler Rebbe in chapter 7, and that of the Tzemach Tzedek in chapter 5.

May Hashem grant that this halachic ruling of the Alter Rebbe, transmitted by the Mitteler Rebbe and the Tzemach Tzedek, apply fully to you. You will give me good news in this regard.

נבהלתי לקרא במכתבו ע"ד השריפה ל"ע שהיתה בדירתו, ובאשר אינני יודע אם יש תחת ידו ספר המצוות להצ"צ (סוף עמוד 228) הנני להעתיק זבה קטע ממכתב הצ"צ מה שכתב בענין כגון זה, וז"ל:

העתק מכי"ק כאאזמו " ר נ"ע.

שמעתי מפי קדושי עליון על מרגלא בפומא דאינשי שאחר השריפה מתעשרים, יען כי השתלשלות מדות העליונות הקדושות וסדרן כך: חסד דין רחמים, ולזאת אחר מדה"ד בשריפה מתעוררת מדת הרחמים שהיא גדולה ממדת החסד שבתחלה כנודע, שהיא מדתו של יעקב נחלה בלי מצרים מבריח מן הקצה כו' עכ"ל הזהב.

ועייג"כ בס' מאה שערים אגרות קדש אדמו"ר האמצעי סימן ז', ואדמו"ר הצ"צ סימן ה'.

ויהי רצון שיקויים בו פס"ד הנ"ל של אדמו"ר הזקן ע"פ קדושי עליון האמצעי והצ"צ על מילואו, ויודיע בשורות טובות בזה.
