By the grace of Hashem,

Fifteenth of Av 5725,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of the participants at the laying of the cornerstone

of the Chabad* neighborhood of Lod, in our Holy Land,

I greet you and bless you,

I have learned with pleasure the good news of the laying of the cornerstone of the Chabad neighborhood of Lod, taking place this Wednesday, 20 Menachem Av.[1] May Hashem cause this event to take place at a good and fruitful moment.

It is well known how important it is to build a home in Eretz Yisrael,[2] 'toward which Hashem's eyes are always turned, from the beginning of the year[3] to the end of the year.' How much more is this the case when it concerns a neighborhood in which there are houses worthy of being called 'great,' according to the interpretation that our Sages* give to this expression[4] — that is, 'houses from which Torah grows,' 'houses from which prayer grows,' synagogues, houses of study,[5] 'minor Sanctuaries'[6] in which the voice of prayer is heard, the voice of Torah — both its revealed portion and the Chassidus*. Their light and greatness will spread further to all the homes of the neighborhood and into each one of those homes.

In these days that follow the period commemorating the destruction of the Temple, in this period of consolation beginning in the month of Av, may our Father in Heaven console us.[8] He is indeed the Consoler of Zion and the Builder of Jerusalem. He will grant a double consolation,[9] and we will soon merit the building of the House of Hashem — the Temple — by the Mashiach,[10] descendant of David. Merit is conferred upon a day that is inherently auspicious.[11] Indeed it is said[12] that 'there was no festival for Israel like the fifteenth of Av,' and so too for the 20th of Av, a date linked to the wood offering brought in our Temple by the sons of Yishai,[13] father of David.

I address you my respects and blessing. Since you have laid the cornerstone, may Hashem grant you to arrive soon at its completion — a complete building and a finished neighborhood — in which perception, understanding, and wisdom[14] will multiply, until the fulfillment of the promise that 'the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem.'

בנועם קבלתי בשורה הטובה על דבר הנחת אבן הפינה של שיכון חב"ד בלוד, ביום ד' כ' מנחם אב הבע"ל. ויהי רצון שתהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת.

ידוע גודל ענין בנין בית בארץ ישראל, ארץ אשר עיני ה"א בה מראשית שנה ועד אחרית שנה. ובפרט הקמת שיכון שיהיו בו בתים הראויים שיאמרו עליהם "בית גדול", כפירושי חכמינו ז"ל בזה, בית שמגדלים בו תורה, בית שמגדלים בו תפלה, בתי כנסיות ובתי מדרשות, מקדש מעט, שיהיו נשמעים בהם קול תפלה וקול תורה (תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות), ושיאירו מאורם ומגדלותם לכל בתי השיכון ובכל בתי השיכון, שבכל אחד מהם יהי' נשמע קול הרינה וקול התפלה.

ויהי רצון שמתאים לימים אלו שלאחרי ימי החורבן, ימי הנחמה המתחילים בחודש מחנם אב, ינחמנו אבינו שבשמים, מנחם ציון ובונה ירושלים, נחמה בכפלים, ונזכה בקרוב לבנין בית ה' זה בית המקדש על ידי משיח בן דוד,

ומגלגלין זכות ליומין זכאין, שלא היו ימים טובים לישראל כחמשה עשר באב וכו', ויום העשרים בו, זמן העצים וקרבנם בבית מקדשנו על ידי בני ישי אבי דוד.

בכבוד ובברכה אשר כשם שהתחילו בהנחת אבן הפינה כן יברכו בקרוב על המוגמר, בנין שלם ושיכון שלם, בו תרבה החכמה הבינה והדעת, עדי שיקויים הידוע כי מלאה הארץ דעה את הוי'
