To Mrs. Bat Sheva Lipsker,

I bless and greet you,

I am writing in response to your letter of 29/8[1], as well as to those that preceded it. You describe briefly what has happened to you until now. Various reasons led me not to respond to your previous letters, one of them being my desire to observe how Divine Providence would guide you during the summer.

The essential point is as follows. You must not view all of this as reason to become discouraged, Heaven forbid, upon seeing that your hopes have not yet been fulfilled. For who among us knows the ways of Hashem? It is therefore certain that a person cannot rely on his own assessment to determine what is truly good for him. On the contrary, he must fully trust in Hashem and, in the formulation of our Sages*[2], 'all of this is likewise for the good.' It is in this way that the truth is revealed — that it is in fact genuinely good. And then one observes, both through the eyes of human intellect and through the eyes of flesh, that there is indeed a visible and tangible good.

We are in Elul*, the month of abundant Heavenly mercy, especially on this luminous day of 18 Elul*. May Hashem therefore bless you in all your needs. With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, both materially and spiritually,

ברכה ושלום!

במענה למכתבה מיום 8/29 וגם הקודמים, בהם כותבת ראשי-פקרים מאשר עבר עלי' בינתים. והיו כמה סיבות שלא עניתי מכתבי' הקודמים, ואחת מהן - לראות איך ההשגחה הפרטית תנהל אותה משך ימי הקיץ...

והנקודה העיקרית היא, כמו שדובר גם כאן, שתביט על כל זה לא ח"ו כסיבה לנפילת רוח וכיו"ב כל שתקוותי' עדיין לא נתגשמו, כי מי מאתנו יודע דרכי ה'. שמזה מובן שאי אפשר לאדם להיות בטוח בהערכתו מה טוב לפניו באמת, ואדרבה הבטחון הגמור בה', ובסגנון חכמינו ז"ל, גם זו לטובה, מגלה האמת אשר טוב הוא, ועד שרואים גם בעיני שכל האנושי ובעני בשר שהוא בטוב הנראה והנגלה. ובהכירי אותה זה מזמן, תקותי שלמותר להאריך בענין האמור.

כיון שעומדים אנו בחוד אלול, חודש רחמים רבים מלמעלה, ובפרט ביום בהיר זה דח"י אלול, יהי רצון שתתברך מהשי"ת בכל המצטרך לה, כולל החלטה טובה בהאמור למעלה, ובנקודה העקרית שידון טוב בעתיד הקרוב, ולבשורות טובות בכל האמור.

בברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
