By the grace of Hashem,

between the hidden day[1] and

the tenth[2] 5726,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of Rav Yoel Sperco[3],

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with considerable delay, your letter along with what was enclosed — a formula for a request for forgiveness[4]. The proposal to give it the widest possible distribution is judicious, for it is fundamental to forgive one's fellow, as our Sages affirm in their Mishnah*[5], at the conclusion of the chapter on Yom Kippur*. No doubt you have approached, in this matter, the various rabbinical organizations and committees. For even if distribution by letter is important, it cannot be compared to that which is accomplished through the rabbis' addresses — since when delivering them, they can ask those present to offer their apologies on the spot.

I am sending you this letter by express mail, so that all of this may be arranged before this Yom Kippur*. For various reasons, I do not presently have the means to publish a letter with the content you propose, though I have taken note of your correspondence with interest. With my respects and my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,

באיחור זמן רב קבלתי מכתבו עם המצורף בו נוסח בקשת מחילה , ונכונה ההצעה על דבר פרסום הענין בממדים הכי גדולים, שהרי בקשת מחילה מחברו מהענינים העקריים הוא, וכדברי חכמינו ז"ל במשנתם בסיום וחותם יום הכפורים. ובודאי פנה בדבר זה לאירגוני ואגודות הרבנים השונים. כי אף שיש חשיבות בפרסום על ידי מכתבים, אבל בודאי אינו דומה באם יפרסמו הרבנים על דבר זה בהנאומים שלהם, והרי בשעת מעשה יש בידם לערוך בקשת המחילה של כל הנמצאים בעת הנאום וכולי.

שולח אני מכתבי זה באופן מהיר, כדי שיהי' עוד שהות לעשות בענין זה לפני יוהכ"פ.

מטעמים שונים אין לעת עתה בידי לצאת במכתב בתוכן שמציע או כיוצא בו, אף שבהתענינות מיוחדה קראתי את מכתבו.
