To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Mordechai HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessing,

In reply to your letter of 17 Shevat, in which you ask my help with the speeches that you may be called upon to deliver before your community.

It is difficult for me to determine what you should say to the members of your community, since I do not know them. Are they merchants, scholars; are they young, old? And what do they expect from the Rav's speech?

But, in general, you will find in HaKriah VeHaKedushah*[2] concepts addressing every category of American Jewry. You will see there in particular an article in English on kashrus*, an appeal to women specifying the role they must play, and a series on galus* and geulah*. You will also find a sequence on all the Sidros* and all the Haftaros*. All this will serve you as starting points around which you can build a speech.

If you have a particular subject in mind that you wish to expound on, and are looking for sources and references, please let me know and I will see what I can do.

I am surprised that you do not describe to me the religious life of your community, the activities you carry out to strengthen Yiddishkeit* and even to spread the wellsprings of Chassidus*. Ultimately, this falls upon you "as well," and you surely have the strength necessary to succeed. If you begin to do so, you will achieve success.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ז שבט, בו מבקש עזר בסידור נאומים שיוכל לנאום לפני עדתו וכו',

הנה קשה להורות חומר לדרוש המתאים בשביל קהלתו כיון שאינו מתאר את מהותם (סוחרים, מלומדים, צעירים, זקנים וכיו"ב), ודרישותיהם מה שהם מחפשים בדרשתו של הרב. אבל, בכלל, יוכל למצוא בהקריאה והקדושה חומר מספיק לסוגים שונים של אחב"י באמריקא. ולדוגמא: כשרות (ישנו שם מאמר גם באנגלית), תפקידם של הנשים (בקול קורא לנשים), ענין הגלות והגאולה וכו' וכו'. כן ישנו שם המשך על כל הסדרות ועל כל ההפטרות אשר יוכל להשתמש בו על כל פנים בתור יסוד וחומר לבנין דרשה.

אם יש ברעיונו איזה נושא מיוחד שרוצה לדרוש אודותיו ומחפש מקורות ומראה-מקומות בהשייך אליו, מטובו להודיעני ואשתדל בזה.

לפלא שאין מזכיר מאומה ע"ד חיים הדתיים של קהלתו, ופעולותיו להחזקת היהדות ואפילו בהפצת מעינות דא"ח. סו"ס "גם" זה מוטל עליו, ובודאי ניתנו לו הכוחות למלא תפקיד זה, וכשיתחיל - יצליח.
