By the grace of Hashem,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of Erev* Rosh Chodesh* Adar Rishon, and I was particularly gratified to see that you continue to occupy yourself with Rav C., the shochet*.

In fact, Shabbos 12a specifies that the prohibition of forgetfulness is derived from the conduct of the Kohen Gadol*[2]. For the verse says, "The lips of the Kohen* shall guard knowledge," and this refers to every Kohen and not only the Kohen Gadol. You will also consult the Zohar*, vol. 3, p. 146b, according to which this is still so at the present time, which cannot be said of the breastplate (choshen*)[3]. And the Zohar specifies that it is only on this condition that the Kohen may bless the people of Yisrael*.

May this delay therefore have a positive outcome, in visible and tangible good, which is good for us. And one who prays for another[4] is answered first. Thus, you yourself will speedily announce good news concerning yourself personally.

נהניתי לקבלת מכתב כת"ר שי' מער"ח אד"ר, ובעיקר לזה שאינו מסיח דעת מענינו של הרה"ח וכו' מהר"ש שי' שו"ב.

- ולהעיר אשר איסור היסח הדעת נלמד הוא מכהן גדול (שבת יב, א), כי שפתי כהן - כל הכהנים ול"ד כהן גדול - ישמרו דעת. ויעויין בזח"ג קמו, ב, אשר זהו גם בזמה"ז (משא"כ ציץ) ושם מוכח דעי"ז דוקא יכול הוא לברך את ישראל. -

ויהי רצון שתהי' העכבה לטובה, בטוב הנראה והנגלה, הטוב לנו. וכל המתפלל בעד כו' נענה תחלה, אשר יבשר כת"ר בשו"ט בהקדם בענינו הוא.
