By the grace of Hashem,

Greetings and blessing,

I was pleased to learn that you had a son, at an auspicious and fruitful time.

Through this letter I extend my blessing that you should bring him, in his time, into the bris* of Avraham Avinu*, educate him to Torah and good deeds, in material and spiritual abundance.

This mitzvah*, which the Yidden* accepted joyously, will introduce joy into your home, as Chazal* say in Kesubos 8b[1] and as Os Chaim VeShalom* explains in chapter 265, paragraphs 27 and 29[2]. You will also consult Moed Katan 9a[3], according to which one rejoices on this occasion in the heavenly revelation.

The latest version of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe* says, at the end of chapter 4[4], that bris milah* enables the introduction of the Jewish neshama* into the body. This is therefore a beginning, which must be joyous, to demonstrate that it is not done under coercion.

Bris milah is also considered a sacrifice, according to the Zohar*, vol. 1, p. 95a[5]. And a sacrifice must be "according to your good will."

שמחתי להוודע מהבשורה טובה אשר נולד לו בן למזל טוב, והנני שולח בזה ברכתי שיכניסוהו לבריתו של אברהם אבינו בעתו ובזמנו ויגדלוהו לתורה לחופה ולמעשים טובים מתוך הרחבה בגשמיות וברוחניות.

ומצוה שקבלו עליהם בשמחה תמשיך שמחה במעונו, ולהעיר ממרז"ל (כתובות ח, ב) ומש"כ ע"ז באות חו"ש סרס"ה סקכ"ז וכ"ט. ועייג"כ מו"ק (ט, א) שאחים שנהנו כו'.

ובשו"ע לאדה"ז מהד"ב סוס"ד: תחילת כניסת כו' במצות מילה - ולפי שהוא תחילת צ"ל בשמחה דוקא שלא יהי' מודעה רבא. גם כקרבן (זח"א צה, רע"א) שצ"ל לרצונכם דוקא.
