Receive my blessing(1) for the Chassidic* gathering of the centenary of the Hilula* of the Tzemach Tzedek* and for a kosher* and joyous Pesach* festival(2).

Letter from the Rebbe's secretariat, issued by the directorate of the centenary fund(1)

The objective of this fund is the publication of the books of the Tzemach Tzedek and his writings, and the dissemination of his teachings on the revealed portion of the Torah* and on Chassidut*. It was established on the occasion of the centenary of his passing Hilula (5626–5726)

To the members of Chabad* organizations and institutions,
in every place, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

In accordance with the proposal of the Rebbe Shlita* and as a follow-up to the collection for the centenary fund, as explained in the talk of Shabbat* Parshat Re'eh*, first day of Rosh Chodesh* Elul 5725(2), the possibility will be offered to each Chabad organization and institution, to its leaders, members, and donors, to acquire a particular merit on the date of the Hilula of the Tzemach Tzedek, may his merit protect us — the 13th of Nissan of the year 5726, which will mark the one hundredth year since his passing Hilula. We therefore appoint you as our emissaries(3) to take banknotes of one monetary unit — one dollar or one pound, according to the currency of the country — and to dedicate them to the following purpose.

Each man and woman connected to your institution — donors, leaders — may, during the entire twenty-four hours of the day of the Hilula(3), purchase from you, who will serve as our emissaries, one(3) of these banknotes and no more, at a price not less than double its face value. The profit will go to the centenary fund(3) and will constitute participation in its activities. Of course, the more one increases the amount of one's participation, the better.

However, there is no place(3) for a person to purchase more than one banknote. On the contrary, this would work against what is desired(3). Students of the institutions of Tomchei Temimim*, Torat Emet*(4), Achei Temimim*, Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak*, Beit Rivka*, Beit Chana*, Ohalei Torah*, who wish to purchase these banknotes, will pay no more than double(3) their face value. Those who wish to make an additional contribution will direct it to the study of the teachings of the one whose Hilula we are celebrating. Those who purchase these banknotes will do so on the condition(3) that all who are capable of studying the Torah will learn, during the twenty-four hours of the Hilula, at least one passage from his writings on the revealed portion of the Torah and another on Chassidut*. Women will choose appropriate texts, in accordance with the directives of the Admor HaZaken* in his laws of Torah study, chapter 1, at the end of paragraph 14.

Whoever purchases a banknote and then discovers that one was purchased on his behalf — meaning he will have more than one in his possession — will certainly return the surplus and receive its equivalent value, because, as stated, the surplus has no(3) merit, quite the contrary(3). If he does not return it, none of these banknotes will certainly come from the centenary fund. That is entirely clear. Those who wish may transmit their name and that of their mother, so as to be mentioned at the tomb of the Rebbe Rayatz*, successor of the one whose Hilula we are celebrating. The delegation just defined is valid only until the end of the twenty-four hours of the day of 13 Nissan 5726(3).

The directorate of the institution will forward the entire sum — after covering its own expenses — along with the lists of names to the directorate of the centenary fund. In the United States and Canada, these will be sent to the central directorate of this fund. Elsewhere, they may be transmitted to one of our representatives, according to the attached list, during the twenty-four hours of the Hilula(3) and, in any case, before the festival of Pesach*(3). Our Sages say(5) that one does not change the purpose of a Tzedakah* donation, and the children of Israel will therefore not commit any injustice in this matter. From various points of view, a loan will also be excluded — including for a limited period — from the funds of this fund. This will therefore be the case here, and even more strongly(3) so, given that one is acting as the delegate(3) of the directorate of the centenary fund. Any change in this matter — for example, making a loan — will immediately nullify the delegation. Everything stated will therefore lose its value and substance. That is entirely clear. With my respects, my blessing of success in strengthening and expanding the institutions, as well as with my wishes for a kosher and joyous Pesach festival,

In formulating this proposal, the Rebbe Shlita emphasized that it adds, of course, to each person's participation in the Chassidic gathering, which will take place in the appropriate manner during the twenty-four hours of the Hilula.

(1) At the conclusion of Shabbat, the eve of 13 Nissan, a special Chassidic gathering took place, during which the Rebbe alluded to this letter, saying: "The letter sent by the centenary fund has surely been read, emphasizing the necessity of contributing to it. If this is relevant throughout the year, how much more so on the very day of the Hilula — a moment of elevation, so defined by Chassidut. Such an elevation is beyond any comparison with the preceding state. Its various aspects are extensively presented in this letter. My intention is therefore only to indicate, add, and emphasize that if all Mitzvot* must be performed with joy and enthusiasm, how much more so those that have a financial cost — especially when that cost is significant. In this case, indeed, the more one gives, the more one merits praise. Joy and enthusiasm must therefore be much greater, for it is certain that Hashem will fulfill His Promise regarding Tzedakah: 'Please, test Me in this matter' and 'you shall tithe so that you may become wealthy' — both morally and physically. All of this will be introduced with a joyous song, and then Tzedakah will be given joyfully, enabling one to transcend limitations."

על פי הצעת כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א - ובהמשך המגבית ל"קרן המאה" כפי המבואר בשיחת ש"פ ראה, אדר"ח אלול ה'תשכ"ה -

כדי לתת האפשרות לכל אחד מארגוני ומוסדות חב"ד, הנהלתו, חבריו תומכיו וכו'.

לזכות בזכות מיוחדת בעצם יום ההילולא של כ"ק אדמו"ר ה"צמח צדק" י"ג ניסן דשנת ה'תשכ"ו, שהיא שנת המאה להסתלקות הילולא שלו.

הננו לתת לכם יפוי כח לקחת כשלוחינו שטרי-כסף יחידות (דולר אחד, לירה אחת וכיו"ב) מטבע דמדינתכם וליחדם למטרה דלקמן.

כל אחד ואחת מהשייכים למוסדכם (תומכיו, הנהלתו וכו') יכולים במשך המעל"ע דיום ההילולא לקנות אצלכם (בתור שלוחנו) שטר אחד (ולא יותר) מהשטרות הנ"ל, במחיר לא פחות מ"כפול" (היינו פי שניים מהיחידה של השטר) כהכנסה לקרן המאה .

ועי"ז - השתתפות בפעולותיו. וכל המרבה במחיר (והשתתפות זו) - הרי זה משובח, כמובן ופשוט.

אבל אין כל ענין ( ואדרבא - היפך הכוונה הוא ) שאיש אחד יקנה יותר משטר אחד.

תל' המוסדות תומכי תמימים, תורת אמת, אחי תמימים, אהלי יוסף יצחק, בית רבקה, בית חנה, אהלי תורה ות' מוסדות תורה בכלל - שירצו לקנות שטרות כדלעיל - ישלמו לא יותר מ כפול . [והרוצים להוסיף ע"ז - תהי' ההוספה בלימוד תורת בעל ההילולא].

כל הקונים והקונות של השטרות הנ"ל - הוא בתנאי שכל השייכים ללימוד תורה ילמדו במשך המעל"ע דיום ההילולא מתורת בעל ההילולא - עכ"פ ענין אחד בנגלה וענין אחד בחסידות. [הנשים - בענינים המתאימים ע"פ הוראת כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן בהל' ת"ת פ"א סי"ד בסיומו].

מי שקנה וגם קנו לזכותו ולכן נמצא בידו יותר משטר אחד - בודאי יחזיר היתר (ויקבל השווי), כי כנ"ל - אין ביתור זה כל מעלה. ואדרבה - באם לא יחזיר אין בידו אף שטר אחד ודאי מקרן המאה. וק"ל.

הרוצים בזה - יודיעו שמם (בצירוף שם האם) ויזכירום על ציון כ"ק אדמו"ר (מהוריי"צ) (ממלא מקום בעל ההילולא).

כל ענין שליחות האמורה הוא אך ורק עד תום המעל"ע של י"ג ניסן ה'תשכ"ו .

הנהלת המוסד וכו' - יכניסו כל הכסף (לאחרי ניכוי ההוצאות) ורשימות השמות - להנהלת קרן המאה (בארצה"ב וקנדה - ישלחו הנ"ל להנהלת קרן המאה המרכזית) או לבא כחנו בענין זה (כפי הרשום בשולי הגליון) במשך המעל"ע דיום ההילולא ועכ"פ - קודם חג הפסח .

ארז"ל: אין משנין מצדקה לצדקה ובנ"י לא יעשו עולה אפילו כגון זו. ובכמה ענינים שללו גם ההלואה לזמן מקופת הצדקה. וגם בנדו"ד כן הוא . וביתר תוקף כי כיון שכל הדבר נעשה בתור שליחות מהנהלת "קרן המאה". הרי באם ישנו בזה (ע"י הלואה וכיו"ב) הרי בטלה השליחות מעיקרא ואין לכהנ"ל כל תוקף ותוכן. וק"ל.

בהצעת כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א האמורה הדגיש אשר, כמובן, זהו בהוספה על השתתפות כאו"א בהתועדות מתאימה במשך המעל"ע של יום ההילולא.

מכתב המזכירות : במוצש"ק אור לי"ג ניסן, היתה התוועדות מיוחדת, בה הזכיר הרבי את המכתב שלפנינו:

מסתמא קראו את המכתב שנשלח ע"י "קרן המאה" אודות ההשתתפות ב"קרן המאה", ואם בכל השנה זמנו הוא, עאכו"כ ביום ההילולא עצמו, שאז הוא זמן העלי' שנקראת עלי' ע"פ תורת החסידות, ובכלל היא עלי' שלא בערך...הפרטים שבה מבוארים בארוכה במכתב, ולא באתי אלא להעיר ולהוסיף ולהדגיש, שאם כל המצוות צריכים להעשות מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב, עאכו"כ מצוה שיש בה חסרון כיס, ואדרבא - חסרון כיס גדול, שהרי צריך לתת באופן שכל המרבה הרי זה משובח, א"כ צריכה להיות השמחה וטוב לבב ביתר שאת וביתר עוז. ובטוח הוא הקב"ה שימלא ההבטחה "ובחנוני נא בזאת" שיהי' עי"ז "שתתעשר" ברוחניות ו"בשביל שתתעשר" בגשמיות...א"כ תהי' ההתחלה בניגון שמח, ואח"כ תהי' הנתינה מתוך שמחה, ואז גם תהי' הנתינה באופן של פורץ גדר.
